Subject: blisters under toenails
My wife has always gotton blisters under her toenails and today we ran a half mary and their back. The blisters get bad enough that her toenails either fall off totally or become detached up to the cuticle. We have been looking through multiple websites for info but to no avail have found nothing. For a little background info; she is very flat footed, he shoes were professionally fitted and have a large toe box. She also, sits back somewhat when running so I am thinking the issue of running only on the ball of her foot is out. We bought her shoes to have a large toe box thinking that was the problem but she says she has more than enough room and the problem returned. We are lost as to the cause, so if anyone has ever heard of other people getting this or a way to solve it we would appreciate the information.

thanks

I overheard a gal asking this same question to a Fleet Feet owner. He told her that they make some kind of a wedge to go in your running shoes so that doesn't happen. I don't have any more details, but that should get you started.

I have the same problem mostly with 2 toes on my left foot. They have fallen off a couple of times now and are currently black and quite unattractive. I find that wearing thinner socks helps alot, but when I do a long run—they are bound to get irritated either way.

good luck with finding a solution!

I had the same problem.  It was being caused by my socks.  The seam of the socks was at the end of my foot, so it would get jammed under my toenails as I was running and cause the blisters.  i switched to seamless socks and put body glide on the ends of my toes and between them.  I haven't had a problem with it since.

This is probably too obvious, but are the cut as short as humanly possible.  I lost two during a HIM and I think the reason was they were longer which gave the shoe "something to lift up on".

Just a possibility but it might be candita.  It's a fungal infection.  It causes whiter spots to form under the nails (which can look like blisters).

There is a LOT of info out there but here is one site..

I'm so glad someone is writing about this. I started having a problem after my last half marathon in November...there looked like bruising under my big toenail or blood or something, but it doesn't hurt. Yesterday I ran a little 3.5 mile race and I was clipping my nails afterwards and it looks like the big toe nail is almost all the way off. What do I do? What is going to happen? Will it hurt when I lose it?

I got it really bad when I went sking one time with boots that were too short, and did a lot of moguls.  I lost both big toe nails.

I ended up going to the pediatrist, they did some local anesthetic and pulled it off with a pliers.  I needed to keep a bandage on them for a couple days and wear sandels, then a bandaid for a couple weeks until the new skin that was under the nail toughened up.

Nails came back fine (takes a while) and it's not that big of a deal - which surprised me.  Not much pain or inconvenience.

Yep, this is something I deal with.  For the poster wondering if it hurts, eh, maybe the first day it's gone, then you don't notice.  In the past 2 years I've lost lots this way, and they just grow back, and then I get blisters, and the cycle renews itself. I've tried everything for me, and nothing works--basically my toes hate me, and I've come to deal with it by ignoring them...I did see a shirt at a marathon expo that was black and looked like a "got milk?" t-shirt, but said "got toenails?" I should've bought it...consider it a training badge of honor, haha!

Do I pull it off, or just wait for things to take their course?

See your DR.

It could hurt (a LOT) to pull it off if it's not ready to come off.  I also was told that if you leave it on, and it IS detached, your new nail could start to grow under it and get ingrown - not a good thing.

Toenails that get bruised or blistered will eventually come off. If you wait until your body is ready to let go of the nail, it will not hurt and it probably won't even bleed. I have two toes that will not keep nails intact if I am doing any sort of consistent running. After a long race, they will be black and hurt a little for a day or so. I have had this issue for years and years, professionally fitted shoes help, and good socks help too, but neither is a guarntee that I won't lose a nail. If I can get to the blister, I will drain it, if not...suck it up buttercup. I have never punctured a nail to drain the blood.

The idea of losing toenails is much worse than the actuality of it.
