Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:30 and got some coffee and ate a 410 calorie protein bar since breakfast wasn't served until 7am. Rode to the race site with Nicole R. and Jeff L. Picked up packet and set up transition while fighting the biting no-see-ums (wicked flying bugs)!
Event warmup:

10 minute bike at 140 HR
5 minute run at 160 HR
Swim 100 and practiced first 2 turns

Comments:

Once I heard the countdown I went into auto-mode. I've been visualizing every aspect of this race and it absolutely worked! I felt so good with my rhythm and every turn. I came out of the water in really good shape with my heart rate at 170...just a tad high.
What would you do differently?:

I might have been able to push a little earlier. Actually 3 seconds slower than last year.
Transition 1
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

This was a bit slow. I forgot to bring a towel but, thankfully, was positioned on grass. There were tiny twigs sticking to my feet as I was putting on socks. Got my shoes and helmet on and headed out.
What would you do differently?:

Not wear socks and bring towel.
Bike
  • 34m 55s
  • 13 miles
  • 22.34 mile/hr
Comments:

I dropped 5:17 from last year. I'm thrilled with this improvement but could have been better. I went into a turn at about the 4 mile mark heading toward the golf course and was going a bit too fast. I couldn't cut the corner enough and went into the oncoming lane and looked up to see a huge SUV coming at me! Yikes! I bailed off the road and nearly lost it. I went through a bunch of pine cones and twigs. I thought I had punctured a tire but it all worked out. I kept focusing and was thrilled to see RSPDiver pass me to help with motivation!
What would you do differently?:

Uh, take turns better!
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

Pretty good transition! Nicole R. helped me with a few tips before the race that helped shave a couple of seconds.
What would you do differently?:

not much
Run
  • 22m 36s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

:50 faster than last year. A little cramping in the left calf in the first half mile. Overall I'm pleased with this time but could have been a little better. I seem to wait too late to push and empty the tanks. I might have shaved a little time if I had pushed earlier. I hit a rhythm about the 1 mile mark with my heart rate at 174 and decided to hold there. I saw RSPDiver but couldn't come close to keeping up!
What would you do differently?:

Push earlier
Post race
Warm down:

Hugged my wife and kids!

Event comments:

This is one of my favorite races in the SCTS! I love the atmosphere with the Marine Corps training around us!

Man, you had a great race, Eric! Even with going off-roading, you held a strong pace. There's a lot to be said for visualization and positive attitude, both of which you seemed to practice a lot for this race. Good job, man!

Dang boy, bring the mountain bike next time you want to go off roading!!

Nice Run. Now had you taken the M&Ms I might have had a faster run split chasing you down for them... they are my favorite after all!!! I told Katie I needed a carrot to chase... you with my m&ms might have been it!

Awesome race, Eric! It was good to see your smiling face again. Great bike handling skills with the SUV and the grass. And finally, smokin' fast run!!! You rocked PI this year!! Hopefully see you again before the Greenville tri!
