After a few weeks of self-doubt and nerves, I finally registered for my first triathlon.

I'll be doing the John Tanner State Park tri on April 30th and, more than likely, the "official" ATL BT tri in Aug. Is anyone else planning on doing the Tanner SP tri?

Y'all take care-

Steven

I'll be there! First one of my season. Doing all but one in the whole Tri the Parks series.

Proud of you that you signed up. No turning back because you can't get your money back so you'd better do it. Now get training because April will be here before we know it.

Isn't it around $300 to do the series! I was gonna try 2 or 3 of them. I probably need to get a USAT number this year to escape the $9 per event charge.

Let's hope they let you wear it. Last year JTee and I did it and I gurantee it was wet suit legal but they said no. That water was freakin freezin, Mr Biggles! I was so cold I couldn't find my stroke until about the last 100 yds. The next event was Ft Yargo and that water was much warmer than Tanner, but they declared it wet suit legal. I'll probably be there because its one of the few TTP events where the camp ground is actually right at the race site. Very convenient with a great playground for the kids.

I hadn't even considered needing a wetsuit, so I guess I'm out of luck on that one.

I'm planning on making this my first tri, too. I'll get registered when my wife shakes loose with the money on the 1st of Feb. (I hope that's not too late.) I have two questions about the whole thing.

My big question is this: wetsuit or no wetsuit? I've read both sides. Having never swam in April before (lakes are still frozen in Iowa where I'm from), will the water temperature justify the need for a wetsuit?

My other question is: I was going to do the Lake Lanier Duathlon as well. Any thoughts on whether this is too close to my first tri?

I am thinking of signing up for one of the atlanta area triathlons but my big FEAR is about swimming. i swim in a 5 foot pool & am scared of open water. How to overcome that. any suggestions. should i try moving to a deeper pool for a couple of months & will that do it!!

This is the only thing stopping me from Tri'n & i'd appreciate any thoughts on overcoming this fear.

thanks

Depends on what element(s) of the open water cause your fear. Are you scared of the depth, the absence of a line to follow, the murky water, the possible critters, Ect? If the deep water scares you then a deeper pool may help, but I don't think it will have the payoff of just spending some time in the natural lake water. I would recomend going to a lake with an established populated swim area and getting use to the open water by swimming laps using the boundry ropes as a guide. I've also found that I can't see much that I really want to see or even know is there with me in the open water so I close my eyes most of the time unless I'm breathing or sighting. Perhaps swimming with your eyes closed in a pool may help until the water warms up a bit. I grew up water-sking, rafting, and playing in lake & river water so I think general familiarity with lake water will help a good bit. good luck and see you at the tri

I like swimming in a deeper pool -- I can balance and float better than a regular shallow pool. I myself have not swam open water in my life -- so this tri will be and adventurous one. Get a good pair of googles and we share overcome our fears.

Good luck...

and this will be the third year in a row for me at John Tanner. This race is fun and relatively flat for the bike and run. The first year (2003) the lake was pea soup and last year it was much clearer but very cold and wetsuits were not allowed as Tbilll mentioned. Last year the whole race was in a drizzly rain and solid overcast.

My son is graduating from UGA on the 14th so I can't do Yargo, but I'm going to try to do most of the rest of the TTP series.

Ok guys, I am in!!  Registered this morning and have that woohoo! kinda sick feeling.  There is plenty of time and the goal would be to soak it all up and do better in the next one.

We can all experience our first tri together!!  I anxious already!

Howdy folks!  Today I signed up for this tri.  I decided that I'll just suck it up and freeze my heiney off in the water.  No wetsuit for me!  I can't afford to buy one and rental doesn't sound like much of an option if I can't practice getting it on and off.  It won't kill me, right?  Guys, we're gonna have to get one of those party poles that people carry at festivals so we can all meet up beforehand.  At least it's only 50 miles from me.  See you there!

Subject: Atlanta Tri'ers- John Tanner State Park- Question?

For Veterans of this race.

Does part of the run take place on a dirt road?  I was out there this past weekend and it seemed like it has to.  Just past the rangers house you run through a gate and hang a left on a dirt road.

It looks like a nice venue though.  This will be my first ever tri and I just want to know what to expect and try not to be too competitive.
