Well, Friday I finally did it...went on my first ride. I recently decided to switch from marathons to triathlons, but I have that small hump to get over (mainly, how to ride and how to swim). I realized that I haven't been on a bike since maybe...8 years ago?

I was stationed in Iraq for 13 months and met a great running partner out there. Her name was Meg. We trained for a marathon together, and she helped me reach my first BQ. She was also heavily in to tri's. She did 8 Ironman's (to include Kona) and various other distance events.
Sadly, she was killed by a roadside bomb while we were overseas. This took a while for me to get over, but that's neither here nor there. Her family sent me her training (road) bike to continue the legacy that was Meg.

I'm so proud to have taken her bike out for our first ride. She treated me well, I didn't spill once! Hopefully I'll live up to her name, and make them all proud

It was indeed a memorable first ride.

Wow!  That's an amazing story.  Congrats on the first ride in the new chapter of your life.

I would have been afraid the bike would have said to me - "Hey!  Why are we going so slow."    (then again, my bike sits on a trainer in my basement laughing at me when it seems me)

That's such a fantastic story!  Way to keep her memory alive!  And to give her bike a new good home.

When's your first race?

Amazing. And touching. I know that you, and her, are in a better place, tri or not. Her legacy will live on in a way, no matter how the way, that makes it better. Not OK, just better.

Wow...thanks for all of the responses. It's wonderful to feel so much support. My first race...good question. I have a mary coming up in May, and then after that I'll be ready for anything! My ultimate goal this race season is the Half Miamiman in November. I live in NoVA, so I'll be entering as many races as possible in this area between May and November. Hope to meet some of you all at races

And yes, the goal is to ride at Kona with Meg one day. (I appropriately named the bike Meg...)
