Last season I bought my wife a Trek 1000C road bike. She had done a couple of races using her mtn. bike, and was officially hooked. The 1000C had been a special order that no one picked up, my wife fell in love with it after a weekend of test rides, and the shop made a sweet deal.

This year its my turn to get the new bike. Do I:

- Get a Trek 1000 (or similar) out of fairness.
- Go ahead and get a higher end model (Trek 1500 maybe)
- Go another season on my '86 Centurian.

decisions, decisions....

Keep your old bike and buy your wife more "stuff".   Diamonds look really nice with new bikes too, just in case you were wondering.

Oooh! Oooh! Get the red one! Everyone knows red bikes are the fastest!

What's your budget? Certainly the 1500 with Ultegra components is spec-ed better than the 1000 . Couldn't say it's the best value at that price point, maybe it might be in your best interest to shop around a little.

I agree that you should shop around, but when you decide what type of bike you want to buy, you should definitely take the time to look on ebay for the model you want. I recently purchased a TREK 5200 OCLV with Spinergy REV X wheels, all in perfect shape, for only $900. I love this bike and couldn't say more.

By the way, it's blue and it really is the fastest color.

Don't listen to these wimps ... blue and red!!!  What have they been drinking?   Get a yellow bike; it's the fastest colour, hands down!  :-)

- Get a Trek 1000 (or similar) out of fairness WHY BE FAIR?.
- Go ahead and get a higher end model (Trek 1500 maybe) IF YOU CAN SWING IT...BY ALL MEANS.
- Go another season on my '86 Centurian. THAT IS AN OPTION WORTH THINKING OF AS IT WILLGIVE YOU THE TIME TO SAVE THE MONEY FOR A CERVELO P3!

Price - Trying to keep it under $1000 (any more and I have to get a second job to buy my wife extra stuff.)

Ebay vs. Bike shop - I have a certain loyalty to my local bike shop. Even though they are the only game in town and have a limited selection (they carry Trek and maybe Bianchi,) their service has always been good and it seems like the more bikes I buy from them (three so far) the more $$$ gets knocked off the price. And since I don't turn wrenches that well, harmony with the local guys who do isn't such a bad thing.

Color - My blue bike has outlasted two red ones.

Thanks for the input.

I think stick with the LBS.  I just got my new Trek 1500 (I love it by the way) from the LBS here in Japan.  I had lots of other choices...Giant, Felt, Specialized which I could have got for heavily discounted prices...but in the end I am very new to triathlon and cycling (read: I have no idea how to do anything to a bike!!) so sticking with the local guy was, in the end, the best bet.  Also considering my bike shop guy, who has qualified and finished the Hawaii Ironman 5 times now, will be my training partner, there wasn't really much to think about.

Anyway, for the few extra dollars you save on Ebay or other sites, you have to ask yourself, is it really worth it???  I say "No".  There is no price you can put on 'good service', especially if you're not that handy with a spanner.

even the bear is wrong sometimes...  everyone knows blue is the fastest color out there!!!!

maximize your budget....  if the higher end bike is within your "toy" budget after pedals, additional toys, etc etc,  i'm sure your wife will understand and be very happy that you got a bike that you are thrilled with

Mine's blue too, and there is no doubt it's the fastes color
