Subject: Upper body work-outs?
Can any recommend some good upper body work that does not require a weight room? I am *not* a fan of gyms and the gym atmosphere/mentality. I would also prefer to do as much as possible at home. I see so little of my family these days.

One word, Gambler, dumbbell.  Not you, I mean the iron ones that you can get cheap at WalMart.  I have two 40 lb sets of dumbbells.  Total investment in resistance training equipment=$40.  This and some calisthenics is all I need for upper body.  Then again, I am not Ahhnold Schwarzenegovernor.

Pushups on the floor or put your feet up on a chair (more stablizing that way) and it recruits more muscle fibers. You can also challenge yourself by doing hand clap pushups or one armed. Pushups off the wall are great too!

Do dips off of a chair for your triceps.

Resistance bands are great for shoulder and back work.

I just got one of those huge rubber exercise balls to assist with my at-home workouts. The ball has a chart of some basic exercises to do. Their are many torso, ab and back excercies you can also do. In addition basics like push-ups and ab crunches on the ball really work your core to stabilize and add to the fat burn. My kids love the thing. I seen "good ones" for $35. I found a large one on sale at Walmart for $12, seems reasonably durable and still has air.

Thanks for the idea on the pushups. I find these to feel better.

Yup! That is about it for upper body. Lots of pushups are great for you. When I was in Kung Fu we would do lots of pushups, and we would do what we called Cat Style pushups that get the whole body involved. And one other GREAT work out is a punching bag. Get a punching bag and some bag gloves and learn just a few punching basics and go to town. Go all out on a bag for 90 seconds non-stop, we called them 90 seconds of hell drills in the police academy! Great work out! My 2 pennies. Jack.
