So I have played a few different sports in my time, lacrosse, hockey, soccer, 1 whole week of rugby, some swimming, and even soem ultimate in college when I could squeeze it in.

During my lacrosse and hockey days I weighed 165-170lbs. I was up front and just had to be quick and able to take a beating. I have dropped much of that weight running and b/c I wasn't staying in game shape.

What do you think is the ideal weight for a 3-sporter who is 6 feet tall? Any thoughts?

I have no idea. My husband is a two-sport sort of guy: swimming and biking, but no running. He's 6' or maybe 6'1". He usually weighs about 145. Every once in a while he gets down to 130, and then starts drinking ice-cream milk shakes with every meal. Divorce IS a possibility

Okay, seriously??? He's very thin, but strong. He has biker-legs and swimmer-arms, but he's just a natural ectomorph.

I'm 5'9" and my goal is to be 180. I figure that to be about 12% body fat.

IMHO, there are too many variable to have an "ideal" weight for any given height.

Check out www.coachgordo.com's tips section for great eating tips.

Eat healthy, protein (at least your body weight-research has shown that anything less can be catabolic during training), carbs mainly from veggies and fresh fruits..I prefer 6 small meals. If you strive to eat as healthy as you can, your body will find the appropriate composition. Weights will also stimulate lean muscle mass growth and a reduction in fat. Try not to compare yourself to anyone individual.

I am thinking I would like to be right around 160-165 by the start of the summer. I am hoping swim training will increase my upper body weight and mass bit. Thanks for the replies.

I'm about 6'2" and I currently weigh 191. I have a big frame, and always carried much more weight than anyone would guess from looking at me. I think I would like to be around 185. No less than 180. Honestly, after being at 230 two years ago, I'm thrilled to weigh 191!

Ideal weight is a VERY individual thing.

I'm 5'8" and 165, and happy with my weight. I'm on the skinny/slender side with a track and biking background. I think if I was 6', I would like to be around 185.

I am 6'2" and weigh 167 right now. At my heaviest I was 240lbs+ and when I decided to start exercising and eating right, I figured a good goal weight would be around 190lbs. At the time it was hard to even imagine getting below 200lbs as the last time I would have weighed that would have been around grade 12. After plateauing at 210 for a while and then dropping to 190, I realized I still wanted to lose a bit more so started trying to get to 180. That I figured would have been the end of my weight loss, but since I began my training for triathlon in August, I have seen a steady decline to just under 170. I can't remember when I last weighed under 170 but I am having no trouble maintaining it. Basically, what the others have said is true, if you maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly, your body will find a weight that works for you.

Instead of focusing on weight, I'd focus on having enough muscle to help you get the job done in the 3 sports, but no more than necessary so that you don't have unnecessary muscle weight.

I don't know how to really track that other than to see how you perform at different weights over time.

5"8" around 166-172 range. Ideal weight for the winter. I generally drop to 162-166 for the marathons I run but have found that to be way too light. so around 165 is generally my best weight but mentally, getting down to 160 is my goal over the long-term (I was 220 3 years ago)...

Like others said, too many variables to say what one certain person should weigh. I'm 5' 11" and weigh 212 and I look really slim at that weight. Most people guess my weight at 170-180. It really depends on your body type and frame size. It's kind of funny, according to most "ideal weight" charts or BMI charts, I'm supposed to be close to morbidly obese! But my body fat is around 10-12%. Those charts aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

ditto on the body fat % - according to the National Strength and Conditoning Association athletic levels for men are around 4-12 % and for women around 12-18 %, although some female endurance athletes tend to lose monthly cycles if they get to low, and too low is individual- find an experienced trainer or S&C specialist to measure your body fat, then go from there, as long as you can keep up the training without compromising your immune system - go lean!

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Focus on how you feel, how your JOINTS feel, how your clothes fit, and your BODY COMPOSITION rather than your body SIZE or weight. It's impossible to pigeon-hole a height into a weight number without knowing your stature... and a number of other variables too....

I learned this little chart in my health class back in high school. If you are 5'0" then you should be right around 100lbs. For every inch you are above 5' then you add 5 lbs. For example, I am 5'4" and should weigh right around 120 lbs, which I do. According to that chart a 6' person should weigh right around 160lbs.

But I hate these scales/charts because there are lots of variables. Male vs. female. Muscle weighs more than fat. Then there are body types. Genetics. The list goes on.

I figure that my body will naturally settle around a good/appropriate weight for this sport.

The variation for guys is 6 lbs per inch instead of 5.  So, 6' would be 172 lbs.  I'm supposed to be 135, but I never manage to quite get there.  I figure I'll just blame it on my big bones from my German ancestry. ;-)

Here's a good example of how body types affect this. Mike (hooked on tri) and Shane gsmacleod are the same height as me

Shane is 167

Mike is 191

I am 241. I am built big

My goal is to get to 220. But I am serious when I say that if I were at 191 I'd look gaunt, and at 167 I'd look like a holocaust survivor. Even when I say I want to lose 20 more pounds my wife starts warning me not to go overboard.

Acording to the BMI index, I am obese. Most people looking at me would say I am overwieght, but not obese.

I mean this with no dissrespect Chris but people perspectives is only based on how they view everyday life on current situations and this should not be confused with what the medical field views as technically obese.

Most our population (in the US) is overwieght (at least).

Very true, Casey, no offense taken

However, my doc says I am not obese, so....

Guess my point is that what the government sets forth as ideal is not universal

I started the process of losing weight, at the time 260lbs in Oct of 2002. By, late 2003 I was down to about 195lbs. This is the lowest I had been since USMC Boot Camp (175lbs). My body fat must have been single digits at that time. It was the least amount I have weighed my entire life. Back to present day. In 2003, I did six sprint tris. I was plan on keeping things going. Things happened in my life that changed what I was doing. In Feb, I moved up to Seattle because my wife was laid off in Austin. I left a perm job to be with her. I am in high tech (HW testing) industry. Anyway I was unable to find a job real quick here. I started waiting tables again and being lazy. It has cost me a great deal in time and effort I put to lose my weight. I am now at 230lbs and starting again. I am (not want) going to get down to 180lbs with 12 months. I can not think about weighing any less that 180lbs. Besides the UMSC boot camp, I do not ever remember being lower than 185lbs.

I played football in HS and was very active. I am 6' .5" and 230lbs. It crazy for to hear some people talk about being 6' and 145lbs.. I do not think I could get that small..

It will be a test to acheive my goals and I wish you well with yours...

Lets see...I'm 5'9 at 145 lbs....with about 9% BF....

Never been more than 155 before.....natural ectomorph.

I think 6 ft tall, the ideal weight lies between 160-170.

But...."most" good endurance athletes are on the thin side.  Less load to carry for the long distances...
