Pre-race routine:

Took wife an son to airport and then had to hurry to get to the race. At a McSkillet burriot and Hash Brown from MCD's. As I was getting close I noticed a huge line to get to parking. Found a spot with about 15 minutes before the start of the rally. Got bike ready and road to start line.
Event warmup:

None, I was going to ride 100 so the first few miles would be a warmup.

Comments:

This was my first attempt at a Century so I just planned on taking it easy. The 100 and 75 mile rides started at 7:30. Getting going took awhile because of the packs. I understand this is a rally but people need to learn to keep to one side of the road. After about 6 miles I was able to get by myself and get aero. My goal was to ride like a tri and draft as little as possible.

The first major hill was around mile 20 and was a nice hill for Texas. My goal was to ride to mile 50 and refuel but around mile 40 I ran out of water (too much sipping waiting for start). I hit the 40 mile stop the porta potty and water and took off. Really most of the ride is a blur. There is alot to remember in 100 miles. I don't know how people right hugh IM race reports. I will tell you at one point the was a Donkey in the road that I was afraid would bolt out in front of my so I took it slow. At this point I realized there were not many people doing the 100 mile loop. At times I would not see anyone except for at rest stops. Was nice but a few times I thought I missed a turn. Stopped again at mile 60 to stretch the legs. Around mile 70 I was in the middle of no where and was going though a T shaped intersection. Some idiot turning onto my road either didn't see me or thought I would stop pulled out nice and slow right at me. I speed up and got missed by probably 2 feet. I speeds by and I just waved nicely. I then start coming across more people and things start to look weird. I actually passed a MTB (knob tires and everything) and the guy is huffing. I think there is no way this guy is riding 100 miles since were are on the part of the course with only 100 miles. I get to the reststop around mile 80 and stop since I was told it was the lunch stop (not much lunch PB&J). When I tell the guy working I am doing the 100 he says finally a real 100 miler (apparently alot of people made a wrong turn, including MTB guy). Well they have to call a P/U to take a bunch of people to the finish because they have like 25 miles to go. I go on knowing at this point it is mostly down hill. Considering at this point I am at my longest ride ever (80 previously) I am feeling surprising well. The feed bottle and Scaps are working wonders, plus I am knibbling on a cliff bar. At mile 97 my right inner thigh cramps for a minute but then lets go. I approach the finish line but there is really nothing there so I head to my car. This is only my second rally and I really thought there would be people at the finish line cheering (oh, well).

I load my car and put on shoes to see if I can run. I manage just over a mile at 7:54 pace which makes me even happier.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really just ride more hills. Time could have been slightly better if I could have gotten going at the beginning.
Post race
Warm down:

Jog.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training, hills and bad roads.

Event comments:

Good race but they could use more people at corners especially for the 100 miler. I got nervous a few times because you never know if people are messing with signs.

haha.. I think that same guy almost took me out on a downhill corner.. he took it wide and I thought I was about to hit the ditch. I hit my brakes and he swerved. That didn't me off as much as the fact that he screwed my speed heading into the next hill.. lol..

If you would have done the shorter courses, there would have been people cheering at the end.... And I do agree about the signs. There were a couple of times that I was wondering if I was heading the right direction...lol.. then towards the end everything started looking the same.. haha..

Great job today! I am sorry I didn't get there sooner...

Way to go on your first Century!  I'm thinking I want to do one this year, also.  I can't believe you had legs left to run even for a mile afterwards!  Well done!

Congratulations on riding your first century.  What's with you and animals?  Deer, donkeys, what next?

Actually... I saw a dead deer, a bunch of dead frogs, one dead skunk, donkies, longhorns, horses, an emu, a field full of ginnies....but.. none of the live animals were in the road. I guess Ken scared the donkey back into the field. I did however see some J@ck@$$ drivers on the course..

Yep, saw all that stuff too.  The donkey just cracked me up.  The people did not even have a fence.  It looked like it was their pet dog just roaming around.  I saw a few horses in yards without fences also and 2 dogs playing in the road, had to slow down for them too.

Great job Ken, nice milestone.

Like many will always say, the first 100 is the hardest.

Great ride Ken. I know the "lost" feeling, I get that even on roads I have been on before.

Great job on your first 100 miles Ken! Yea, it's nice to ride alone, but it can get worriesome... when you aren't sure if you going the right way. On rallies, so few people do the longer distances... it's easy to think you are lost.

Sounds like a very interesting ride! A donkey, huh? Last year I did this ride and there was a guy getting CPR at the top of the first hill. I liked the hills on the course but wasn't able to do it this year. Congrats on your first century ride, plus a 7:54 run afterwards. That is awesome!
