Smithfield Sprint Triathlon - TriathlonSprint

View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Smithfield, Virginia
United States
Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 3/11
Pre-race routine:

up early to meet my friend Cathy who was doing her first tri; got to the race site at 8am, picked up packets, set up transition area, chatted with lots of people and waited around for a long time
Event warmup:

none; event started at 10am, my swim start wasn't until 11:23am, no point getting in the pool at 9:30 to do a swim warm up
Swim
  • 07m 22s
  • 328 yards
  • 02m 15s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started slow and used the early part of my swim as a warm up; I picked up the pace after about 75m but never really gto up to speed; the pool was a bit crowded; I wanted an easy swim but I took it a bit too easy
What would you do differently?:

have a better way to warm up while waiting for the pool start, get into my groove a bit faster
Transition 1
  • 02m 29s
Comments:

it was cold outside after leaving the nice warm pool room; I was a bit slow getting my socks on and getting my jacket on; then I had a long way to go with my bike out of the transition area
What would you do differently?:

not much; I needed some extra layers for biking wet with temps in the 40's
Bike
  • 34m 18s
  • 10.5 miles
  • 18.37 mile/hr
Comments:

it took me 3 to 4 miles to get going; again I think related to my lack of warm up; my legs were cold and not wram after the swim; once I got in a groove I was passing a ton of people, I wish the bike course had been longer; I could have done more damage
What would you do differently?:

not much excpet get more warmed up for the entire event
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

I was a little slow here, my hands were really cold and my dexterity was not great; I tossed my bike jacket and ran in only my trisuit and gloves/visor
What would you do differently?:

move quicker
Run
  • 31m 41s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

I really wanted to try and finish strong; I'm not known for my 5K speed so I just did what I could, I was a little cold with my bare arms but I warmed up and kept going, got passed by a few people but not as many as usual
What would you do differently?:

do more speed training; work on my run pace
Post race
Warm down:

hung out and watched some friends finish, as soon as I stopped racing I had to bundle up, it was jus barely 50 outside and very windy

What limited your ability to perform faster:

not much speed training, I've been doing lots of long stuff for my IM race

Event comments:

this is a good early season race; weahter is always a crapshoot this time of year; I'm happy with my performance; I have some things to work on before my HIM next month

Nice race!  Sounds like you need some more clothes though...

It's hard on a pool swim to really warm-up - maybe some stretches/jumping jacks or something next time.

Congrats on the hardware Sue!  You are getting fast.  It looks like you are right on target for CdA.  You are going to do well at Kinetic later this month as well.
