What do you possibly have to gain by doing the race?  I don't get this.  If you know you have no chance whatsoever of finishing, why show up?   Just stay home and go for an easy bike ride or swim and start thinking about your race in June.

My friends sometimes will ask me "If you have no chance in winning the race, why do it?"

Why do any of us BOBers race?  Participation, experience, to be part of a sport, exercise, fellowship....

So you do a triathlon as a duathon?  So what?  Have fun and gain some experience.  I'm assuming you already paid your non-refundable race fee anyway?

Thanks for all of the input. Looks like I'll sit this one out. Seems like the smarter thing to do.

I will continue to train however. I will be focussing on the following disciplines:

REST
ICE
COMPRESSION
ELEVATION

DNF or relay!

Consider race day a swim/bike brick workout with a snazzy cotton t-shirt thrown in.

It's only a DNF is you intend to do the whole thing and don't.  I did the Country Music Marathon last year and I saw tons of people with the marathon number peal off at the 1/2 marathon point.  The temptation for me to do the same was great but I had set out to do the full marathon and that's what I was gonna do.  All those people who signed up for the full and took the 1/2 marathon exit DNF'd in my opinion.

I do not think so. I figured they swtich to the half at the half. .

Oh course they might have also made a bad turn also.

I suppose you could say that about any DNF.  If you finish the swim and the bike and drop out, you could say you switched to a duathlon 2/3rds into the race.

It's all in how you spin it.  This reminds me of the Cold War era story about the race between the American and the Soviet.  The American won so the Soviets reported, "The Soviet came in second and the American came in next-to-last."

You can only do that if there is a race you can switch too and of they let you. yes doing the swim and bike you did finish the aquabike but if there is no aquabike then how can you switch to it?

Basicly you need to be listed as a finisher in that division otherwise your finish did not count for anything. Ulimately does it mater if you are a dnf? it only maters really to the person who does the race. Its how you feel about yourself that counts.

According to Scott Tinley, "There are only two reasons to drop out of a race: The first is if you manage to break your right femur; the other is if you have busted the left one. Beyond that, I can't think of any reason not to finish."

I can think of one more reason....when you are 1/4 mile out in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, sick as a dawg, start hurling your cookies and it's either DNF of drown, I highly reccomend DNF to live and race another day.

According to Triturn, "Ain't none of us Scott Tinley. Grade 3 sprain is a darn good reason."

Good Lord, it's not about any silly honor issue. The guy is so injured that he knows beforehand that he will not be able to finish the race. The amount of good that could come from racing in this condition is negligible compared to the potential risk of worsening or prolonging the current injury.
