Master 2356 Fenton, MI | Subject: Hawk Island Triathlon Well, I noticed that Hawk Island had 8 BT'er already signed up, so I thought I might post something about it and get a little conversation going. Trix said that she knew a couple other folks racing it too. This will be my first tri of the year, and my third tri overall. I just started last year .... Has anyone raced this event before? Care to share any details? Water conditions, clarity, temp... Same for the bike course and run. The event is less than two months away and I'm geeked to get it on. I haven't been out to the park itself, but went to State, so I know the area a little. I'm planning to do a brick workout out there once the water is warm enough to brave. I'll be sure to post it here, if anyone wants to get together. Does anyone live close enough to do a temp test every now and then? Also, how was the venue for family entertainment? I'll probably have the full clan in tow, so they better have some swing sets, etc... :) Edited by matt3liv 2008-04-02 7:36 AM |

Master 2356 Fenton, MI | Subject: RE: Hawk Island Triathlon Alright! I've read that its an excellent event for first time racers. The bike course looks really flat. I think I figured it to have only 108 ft of climbing over the ~10 mile course. Most of it looked to be coming in and out of the park too. Out on the road, it looks like a light climb for the first half, and a light decent for the second. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/map.asp?routeid=40822 I can't quite tell what's going on with the run. I had assumed it was a paved jogging trail, but the course description says "rustic". Perhaps its a dirt trail? That could be muddy so early in the year. |

Member 31 Ferndale | Subject: RE: Hawk Island Triathlon I did this tri last year and plan on doing it again this year. It is a good start to the season. The water was fine, I would say only a 1/4 of the people had wetsuits on. The bike was good too. It goes through part of the MSU campus, if I recall correctly. There are minimal hills for the bike. The run is beautiful. Mostly flat and is through a tree covered path. Part of it is trail, maybe 1/4 mile or less. My memory is a little shady on details. But I guess if nothing sticks out, it couldn't have been bad. The only complaints were there were no mile markers, but according to the website, they will have them this year. The swim was different They had each person run into the water in several second intervals. But according to the website, they are giving the option of group start or single start. The single start took a lot of the anxiety of the crazy swim start. We all lined up by number and waited until a guy with a stop watch said "go". I am interested in seeing how it will work this year. Overall, it was a well organized Tri for being the first one. In response to your question of family entertainment, I do believe there are playscapes for the children. It is a really pretty park. |

Master 1895 | Subject: RE: Hawk Island Triathlon I know it's my first tri and the individual start would probably be the smart way to go....but I'm actually a little curious to see how I do with a normal group start. I'm hoping to get out for a few open water swims before the race and I do have a wetsuit. What do you guys think? Try the group start or go with the individual start? Master 2356 Fenton, MI | Subject: RE: Hawk Island Triathlon Based on my limited experience, I think I would have faired better in my first tri with a "time trial"/individual start. However, if you are an experienced swimmer or can effectively draft, the group would help. I'll do the group start and try to draft someone fast.
EMM- What was the run trail like? Paved or dirt? |

Master 2356 Fenton, MI | Subject: RE: Hawk Island Triathlon hamiltks10 - I'll post something for a scouting day when folks can get together and check out the course. We can practice some group swim starts if you'd like. Basically, if you start in the middle of the pack, expect to bump into some folks. If you start out to the sides or in back, its not bad. |

Member 31 Ferndale | Subject: RE: Hawk Island Triathlon The run is on a flat, paved path through the park. There is one part, for maybe 1/4 mile or so, that is a trail run of dirt, rocks, etc. The path is mostly shade. The course follows the path which loops out, around the lake and then back. I also remember that they didn't close the path and there were random people walking, walking their dogs, etc. which was kind of weird. Most moved to the side but I don't think some of them realized a race was going on. As for the swim start, the individual start was much easier. However, since this race is mostly newbies, it might be a good idea to do the group start. Everyone will probably be as nervous as you.The only way to get used to group starts is to do them..... |

New user 55 | Subject: RE: Hawk Island Triathlon I did this race last year as my first ever tri and loved it. Loved pretty much everything about it. There were a ton of first timers so that really took the edge off and the support crew was really, really friendly. The bike route is a 5 mile out and back loop with a small hill about 1/4 mile out of transition. Nothing major by any means. All of this said, when I got to mile five and and turned to head back, I hit a pothole and blew out BOTH of my tires!! Man did that suck!! After walking my bike for 4.5 miles before the SAG crew found me, I ended up taking the dreaded DNF. Despite not finishing though, I really enjoyed this race. What I really liked about it was the individual start. They lined us up by number and started us all 5 seconds apart. When they told us they were doing that I didn't think five seconds would make that big of a deal. But it really did. On a 400 meter swim the course can get pretty crowded, as can T1, so this allowed a lot of people to already be out on the bike course by the time I hit the water. A lot less congestion to battle! I plan on doing the race again this year and I'll sign up for the individual start. It does take some of the fun out of a group start, but again, on a 400 meter swim, there can be a lot of congestion on the course and in T1. Another thing I really liked about it was the amount of first timers there. It really took the edge off for me. Not to mention that this is a great course for new comers. The swim is short and the bike course is flat. Very beginner friendly. I even talked my brother into making this race his first tri. As far as family entertainment, nothing special. It's a park so there are swing sets and that stuff around. And then afterwards you could always run up the street to Leo's Lodge for great pizza and adult beverages But yea, I'm really looking forward to doing this race again this year. It'll be my warm up for my first ever OLY on June 22. Plus, I'm really looking forward to getting my revenge on that pothole |

Master 1467 Small Town | Subject: RE: Hawk Island Triathlon I'll be racing this as my first tri also. I regularly have run around Hawk Island. I believe that they have now paved the area in the back of the park too. If anyone wants to meet there just to have a few fun laps, let me know. We could take the families there sometime to meet and eat. It's actually very nice! Also it's where I proposed to my now wife. Anyway, It's 1.5 miles around the outermost paved path, so 4 laps is 6 miles. I watched the race last year and things seemed to go smoothly. Plenty of space for family to watch, hang out, play volleyball, throw a frisbee, grill and of course swim. There's a really nice playground for kids with an area for toddlers too. The bike leg may be rough as the roads in the area are all unfilled pot holes (I assume like the rest of Michigan). I'll work on water temps. I think they may be posted somewhere on the Ingham County Parks website. I'll check on it. Anyone feel free to email me and we can make plans to meet there, even if it's not until race day. Subject: RE: Hawk Island Triathlon I have not pulled the trigger yet, but am looking at this for my first tri. I was going to make the Big Fish one my first, but this got my attention. I started a thread about upcoming 5k's and there is one at Hawk Island on May 3rd. I have never actually been in any kind of road race, so I wanted to do a 5k first. Then I seen that Hawk Island has a tri, so my logic says run the 5k and have a feel for the course. Anyone care to join up for the May 3rd run? I ahve the link at my work computer and can psot it on Friday. Joe

Member 198 | Subject: RE: Hawk Island Triathlon Here is a link http://www.playmakers.com/racecalendar/event.php?raceid=722 The link says it's $25 after April 16th but the flier I have says today is the last day to register for $20, instead of $25. My secretary is one of the organizers for this event. Her daughter Mallory has spinal muscular atrophy and just had surgery last month, resulting in her being confined to a wheelchair the rest of her life (she's 12). So, doing this 5K will not only prepare you for the running portion of the Hawk Island Tri, it will also benefit a great cause. I did this 5K and Hawk Island Tri last year. If anyone wants to join me at the 5K this year, I'll be glad to show you the swim course, transition areas, and even take a spin on the bike course. They have face painting for kids at the 5K as well for anyone trying to convince their kids to join them. |
