I am almost hesitant to do this, because it almost feels like I am fishing for sympathy, and that is surely not the case. Like GamblerZ said, it's cathartic to post sometimes.

so, I took my watermelon-size knee back to the ortho this morning. The swelling is taking over my whole leg, ankle, and foot. The PA looked me over, poked and prodded, and offered 2 solutions. We can try to drain the fluid, but that will also result in losing some of the Synvisc in the process. The other thing is to do nothing and wait for it to go down on it's own and watch for signs of infection. And then of course I'd still go for the 3rd injection next wednesday. If it is still as swollen as it is now he would not inject any more fluid into the knee. The Synvisc people say this kind of reaction happens in about 3% of patients using their product, and I am the first person in this practice to have an adverse reaction. They do an average of 15 Synvisc injections a week. Lucky me, huh?

But my day did get better. After I had the injection on wednesday and felt fine, I bought lift tickets for me and my son for tomorrow. Actually my husband went and got them, way out of his way too. Way sweet! Then I woke up yesterday and when I saw my knee, my first thought was that I would not be able to ski on saturday. Sure enough, on the tickets in huge, bold, capital letters "NO REFUNDS, NO EXCHANGE." So I called the store and explained my situation to the manager who was only too happy to offer me a refund or letting me switch to a future trip! Sweet! I didn't even have to grovel LOL So I picked another trip and am definately a satisfied customer.

I'm concerned about one of the races on my "to do" list. It is exactly 6 months from now, and that's how long the relief lasted from my first series of Synvisc. So, if I sign up, you know I'll be going thru this again in 6 months. If I don't sign up, the race sells out and I am fine, kicking myself for not signing up.

So, if you're still reading, what would you do?

I am sorry to read about your knee. I had considered doing the SynVisc injections for my "crunchy" knees since I heard so many good things about it. But, I always worry that I would be that 1% in the medical disclaimers.

As for the race, I would go sign up and pay the money. The only downside is that you wouldn't be ready to compete when the event rolls around. Then you are only out the entry fee. The upside is huge! You could have a miraculous recovery and win the event. However, one thing is for sure. If you didn't enter, you would kick yourself 6 months from now when you are 100% and in prime condition. Look at it as buying an option to win.

I am quite the math geek, so thanx for putting into something I can understand! I don't mind dropping the $$ with the probablility of doing the race. But as Dr. Phil says, "past performance is the best indication of future performance" (whooaaaa.....I'm watching waaay too much dr. Phil) I've spent a lot of $$ on races I ended up unable to do. That being said, I'm mailing the entry tomorrow

GamblerZ, if Synvisc is an option for you, and your insurance covers it, I highly recommend it, despite this problem I'm having. I had 6 whole months of a pain-free joint and it was a beautiful thing. Well worth the discomfort I'm having now, although if I had my 'druthers, I skip this part. But it works so well, that's why I don't want them to drain my knee and I'll be there for the next shot on wednesday.

So sorry about your knee problems. It's hell to be incapacitated from the things you long to do. I wish you good healing.

I too would sign up and pay the fee. I waste money on much less good things!! And the possibility is there and waiting for you. So -- I think you've made a great decision to send in your fee. I will be thinking good, healthy thoughts for you and your knee over the next 6 months!!

Tri-mom,

Good for you. Send in that fee and think positive thoughts about your knee for race day.  It is going to be feeling fine that day and you will run a great race. I would say to pray but I don't think God likes you Red Sox fans too much.

Tri-mom, I agree with going for it.  Depending on the size of the race, some RD's have stipulations that for a small fee you can transfer the name to someone else (if it sells out, there's probably a list of people wanting that spot) or transfer for the following year.  However, since your knee is going to be fantastic, you won't have to worry about that.

Sorry to hear about the knee. Like they say ".... makes us stronger." I agree with entering. You will appreciate the distraction of the pending race before the next seimester starts at school. Hope other pieces of life are falling back into place. By the way if you channel enough good thoughts into the Red Sox your knee will be fine. I have found the more good will I send to the Sox the worse the do and the better my day to day reality is. Good luck and you will have a great season.

I am laughing my a** off at the way you guys have tied the Red Sox in with my knee! OMG, that is just too funny! Kevin, I think you are correct, God is not fond of Red Sox fans. Year after year our prayers go unanswered. I am hoping that he will see fit to make this THE YEAR!

Ok, I signed up for the local Danskin race last night, it's at the end of July, and I sent in my registration for the Oly at the end of August.

DO NOT TELL MY HUSBAND!! LOL OMG he'd have a stroke! $135 bucks on a 'maybe'. Worth it to me tho, keeps me focused. The apps will be available 2/25 for the other races I want to do and I'll just get that done as well.

Thanx for the encouragement gang, I sure need it about now

Hi TriMom

I would pay the entry fee and hope for the best. It's a way to look forward to a goal you have set. Plus if you could not do the tri, you could always participate as a volunteer. I know, I've done exactly that in the past. You still get to enjoy the day with all the other athletes and it keeps you from getting too down on yourself.

The hardest thing for us "athletes" to do is to rest when we are supposed to, but it sounds like that's what you must do.

If you have access, get in the pool. That's the best therapy. You don't even have to swim, just tread water, or water run. There is no strain the the knee that way.

I hope you feel better, I've been through the knee problems earlier and they are a recurring pain in the a----!!!

Let us know how you are doing.

Evelyn
