Subject: Cassette Question

Okay, seems a bit silly but I have a question.

Currently, I have 11-23 10 spd cassette on my Felt B2.  Mainly used for racing, and riding generally flatter routes, so that's been fine.

However, I'm going to a training camp in Arizona in a few weeks that's going to include a good amount of climbing.  Planning to go with a 12-27 10 spd cassette for the camp, so I don't toast my legs trying to grind up the hills with only a 23.

Will going from the 11-23 to 12-27 require any chain length or rear der adjustments?  I'm comfortable doing any rear der. adjustments myself ( I do my own tuning already ).

I had a similar ? awhile back. Experts will need to chime in, but it sounds like you will need to at least add a few links, going from 23 to 27 as the largest sprocket.

Good luck with the change and the riding.

Buy the second chain. That way, you caqn swap both components simultaneously and they'll both work flawlessly. Follow the chain length guide found at shimano.com (I think in the rear derailleur install tech guide) and it will work well.

Not sure when SRAM will have a true 10-spd powerlink which is easily removable like 9-speed; that makes it really easy!

Seems like the verdict is need to replace the chain ( since I don't have any idea where/if I have any links for the current one ).

I'll have my LBS do that, since I need to buy the chain and cassette from them anyway.  May as well have them install it.

Then I can keep current chain and cassette together to put back on for racing later on, when I go back to the 11-23.

Thanks!

I'm no expert by any means, but I just switched the same cassettes you're talking about and I didn't change my chain and everything is working perfectly.
