Seal Beach, California
United States
Overcast
Total Time = 53m 51s
Overall Rank = 425/1356
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 41/95
Pre-race routine:

Planned to the group (Mike, Val, Evan, Matt, Sherri and Keith) infront of the number pickup at 7:30. Got out of the house in plenty of time and got on the freeway and realized I had forgetten the Garmin. After much deliberation, decided to go back and get it. Had trouble tracking it down but finally found it and got going to the race.
Event warmup:

Brisk walk to the starting area from the car.
Run
  • 53m 51s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

I had going in wanting to run at 8:30 pace but figuring a 9:00 was more realistic. After 3 miles I was averaging 8:15 but I knew there was no way I was going to hold pace the 2nd half. Just grinded out the last 3 miles the best I could. Very surprised to actually have finished almost 30 seconds faster then last year. (54:13)
What would you do differently?:

Possibly hold back a bit on the early stages of the race but I really didn't have a good gauge of my overall fitness level which was not as good as I had hoped. Over all, effort was there.
Post race
Warm down:

Found Keith and waited for the others to finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of workouts over the last 3 to 4 weeks.

Event comments:

Good race, the addition of timing chips was a nice surprise. Planning on running this race again in 09.

Hey, nice job out there

Learning how to pace a 10k for your current fitness is a tough task. Sounds to me mile you were on pace in the first half but it takes a lot of practice to push hard in the final miles when the legs/lungs and the rest of the body are screamin stop.

From you report, it sounds like you managed the last few miles well and kept the train on the tracks for the finish. (Nice Improvement over last year) Most folks measure improvement at this distance in terms of a few seconds at best. (Your improvement is big)

Best of all, you got to hang out with the rest of the cool kids

Great race, Kelly!  And what a nice surprise to find out you beat last year's time!

Hope the house sale and move go smoothly over the next couple weeks, so that you can finally relax a bit and get back to a more normal routine...
