Run
Comments: Having never raced the distance, my plan was to start out slower and speed up based on feel. Shelly and I missed the start of the Blue Corral, so we started with the Orange Corral, as a result we weaved more Shelly on I95. The garmin showed 10.1 miles (hence 11miles in the splits) with an 8:39 pace at the end due to weaving so much, but man it was a log jam. Since this was my first 10 miler we upped the ante and made it a trail run for the first few miles. Overall first couple miles felt great. Around mile 2 or so bumped into NewLeaf and Z. Ran with NL till about mile 5, and then he pulled a stealth ninja move and disappeared into the Crossed the 10k in a new PR, does it count in a 10 miler?? ;) and then my buddy Mr IT Band joined in for the final three and a half miles. At first it wasn't bad, but got worse to the point where I would grimace on each step. Said to myself, time to push and go the distance. I cued up the Rocky music in my head, grabbed a beer (which gave me a little extra punch) and headed for the home stretch. Around mile 8 I broke from Shelly to try push it down the stretch, and got a 15 second lead I was off ;) The final two miles I tried to drop my pace around 8:15 then 8:00. I started a little early and had to back off a bit because of a side cramp, but I found that 3rd gear (no 4th or 5th in this engine) and motored home to beat my goal pace pf 1:30. I was able to do an almost perfect 51/49 negative split like Joe Friel says is so important for a good race. What would you do differently?: Start with the right corral, hopefully more people with similar paces. Other than that I was very happy with my performance. Post race
Warm down: Walking between metros, and a hardy lunch in Crystal City with the crew. Then an Ice Bath when I got home.. I am thinking I will replace all my showering with ice baths since I love them so much! What limited your ability to perform faster: A few things: 1. Start with the right corral, hopefully more people with similar paces would reduce extra running and weaving 2. Train for more than 4 weeks; one month ago, with my IT band injury, I was only running 10 minutes at about 11min/mile pace Event comments: Enjoyed it a lot. First time doing a big race, and really enjoyed it. Wish I could have seen the elites zoom by, but having to hit Haine point first meant they were done:) Last updated: 2007-12-13 12:00 AM

Routine? Show up right before it starts of course.. do people have routines? If so I will have to work on my dance moves so I have a routine ready for Kinetic.
I did eat some type of fancy bar, I think Clif and drank a water
Jogged some for the Navy-Archive stop. And then warmed it up in the pre-race Porta-Pots, and made sure to miss the start
