Clermont, Florida
United States
Sommer Sports
74.5F / 24C
Overcast
Total Time = 2h 49m 20s
Overall Rank = 179/335
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 18/28
Pre-race routine:

Got to the race site early, struggled remembering how to lay out transition...this was my first tri in several months.
Event warmup:

Ran about 1/2 mile then headed over to the lake to warm up in my wetsuit. The wetsuit felt way to restrictive (obviously I've mis-sized it) so I pulled it off & swam the race without it.
Swim
  • 26m 5s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

Best triathlon swim ever, because this wave had only 28 swimmers I started right on the inside bouy & swam up the bouy line making 2 very good turns at each leg change bouy....I think I can still take a minute off this distance.
Did this in a 1:35/100 avg & 1:30 will be the goal for IMFL.
I wish the swim segment was longer & the run segment shorter!
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster!
Transition 1
  • 02m 45s
Comments:

Once on the bike I had some issues using the multi-sport setting on the Garmin 305...next time I'll know what to do.
Bike
  • 1h 19m 5s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.85 mile/hr
Comments:

Not a bad bike segment on a slightly hilly course. I backed this down with 5 miles to go because I felt I would suffer more on the run. There's still much work needed on the bike in the next 5 weeks before Gulfcoast!
Transition 2
  • 00m 53s
Comments:

I used my new Zoot tri shoes and they helped make this a fast T2. Both of my transitions went very well taking a total of just over 3 minutes for both...that really helps in the overall race time.
Run
  • 1h 00m 38s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Still slow but this included a 1 minute port-o-let stop. I also took a few 1 walk minute breaks at aid stations after feeling some twinges of cramps in the quads...overall felt good through most of the run.
I need to train & feel comfortable running at a higher hr...ran this at about a 154bpm avg & need to push it to 160-163bpm.
What would you do differently?:

Need to keep doing interval work in training.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

I approached this as a training exercise & gave me a feel for where I am in my training plan.

Event comments:

Well, I can swim, bike & transition pretty competitively - Unfortunaltely all the ground I gain in the first 2 segments/transitions I give back on the run!
A good early season warm up, this is my 2nd fastest Oly time.
I got some great bike & run power/hr data and have a good feel about developing the training progression in terms of focus.
The 25th anniversary of this race, I enjoy racing in Clermont and competing on this course - it's not crowded with only 300 to 400 participants (no bike drafting issues in this race!)
If you're looking for a good early season Oly, I would recommend considering this race.

Nice race!

It is fun to train and race with power to see how different courses, hills and wind all play a huge factor into pace compared to power.

First tri of the year is always exciting and fun to get back to racing!
