Subject: avatar question

Hi,

I was having difficulty updating my avatar.  I tried several ~25 kb jpegs, but they wouldn't take.  All I could do was delete the old one.  Any notion what the problem is?

Thanks!

"Among people working on virtual reality and cyberspace
interfaces, an "avatar" is an icon or representation of a user in a
shared virtual reality" from www.dictionary.com

avatar \AV-uh-tar\, noun:
1. The incarnation of a deity -- chiefly associated in Hinduism with the incarnations of Vishnu.
2. An embodiment, as of a quality, concept, philosophy, or tradition; an archetype.
3. A temporary manifestation or aspect of a continuing entity.

also from dictionary.com

not sure how particularily useful ANY of that is!

OMG, it really is showing, isn't it? LOL yes, I have WAAAAAAYYYY too much time on my hands. I'm even studying too, but I don't have class until Thursday.

Yes, it has been sent even tho it shows as being in your outbox. I wondered the same thing until I received a reply indicating it had been sent.

Sharon, the Avatar is the little picure some people have under their names. I decided to look up the origin of the word. That's the whole "too much time" thing Anyhow, Jack had sent me a link to a page that had a ton of great avatars, and I can't find it now. So I changed the subject line on this post and maybe he'll pop in when he gets up (or off work) and share it wih all of us.

Hopefully Jack will read this when he gets up and send the link -- I would be greatly interested. Then I will need to find out how to add it under my name...   so much to learn..................

sure, what are you studying?

I did a study guide for a test I had to take last week and sent it to another woman in my class. I knew there was no way between work and her kids that she was going to have time to look at any of it and it was pretty intense. Since then she has helped me with my Spanish and I can even begin to believe that I MIGHT pass that class.

So what are we studying Kevin? and how's your Spanish?

ok wrybosome:

This is just because of the browser cache on that avatar. If you CTRL-F5 the page (or maybe it's shift-f5), the image should update right away.  Otherwise, usually it takes about a day, I think. Maybe less.

btw...i put your old image back up.  try it out.  let me know if works or not.

- actually, i just went in as u and tried this...didnt work...i will go to the board for this forum and see what is up...give me a few days...

Ron, I've tried adding an avatar to my logon but it just will not accept it. I get a message that the picture file is too large. Any idea where I can get an avatar that will be contained within a smaller sized picture?

And Ellen, if you have so much time and you love to write so much, I have a Law essay due by the end of the month on "Alternate Justice in Family Law". Care to help out????

Thanks Ron.  As far as avatars go, it's a sanscrit word that means the earthly appearance of a god.  For instance Vishnu appearing on earth as a man or a cow.  Or the Christian god appearing on earth as jesus.  Or you and me in the digital world as our pics.

Yes, I've been patiently (kind of, if checking every 5 minutes is being patient) waiting for Jack to send us that link -- is he still sleeping? I thought I saw him on earlier. (yes, I too get on this board more than once a day -- and I have no excuse, because I have no injured knee)!!

Machiavelo - avatars need to be under 50kb...u can either convert the picture down to a lower quality jpeg with many photo programs coming with cams, scanners or free online stoftware OR send it to my email and i will do it and put it up for u.

Ellen,

It's a business management class. Pretty damn easy and I really have plenty time to do it but just have to get off this website long enough. It is getting in the way of my job hunt too. My spanish sucks. I tried to learn some for out trip to the Dominican Republic last year but did not retain any.

yeah, I hear ya. Here I am, and of course I should be working on the paper that's due wednesday. I am pretty disappointed in the whole Spanish thing. I had really hoped to learn the language and now I just hope whatever grade I get does not drag my GPA down too far. I'd be Dean's List if not for Spanish II. Yes, I'm compulsive about my grades too. I WILL get that paper done today.

I just love this site -- we have gone from avatars to Spanish and GPAs in one fell swoop!!

I'm just checking in to see if Jack has been able to send that link yet. Or maybe someone else has one? Ron?

Nancy - go to your 'control panel' on top right, then once inside, scroll to the bottom and 'upload profile pic'.  pics need to be <50kb - jpeg and maybe gif format.  uploading a brand new one should be no problem although changing one seems to be problematic lately...working on finding an answer though.
