Overall Rank = 398/468

Pre-race routine:

Woke up had coffee, PB/bagel and contemplated with Craig about even racing. The weather was crappy, sheeoty rain, cold and snow. We decided to DTFU and race anyway. Drank 2 bottles of water headed out. Met up with DJDavey, Force, PJGrande, Sgoehner and Tri-N-Spin. Took a few pics and did a little stretching. Didn't get more than 3 hours of sleep the night before so I kinda knew ahead of time this wasn't going to be a great run.
Event warmup:

Stretching and lotsa peeing!! A little too much hydration before the race.
Run
  • 2h 18m 49s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 36s  min/mile
Comments:

I was disappointed in my overall pace. I tend to start out too fast and then not be able to finish comfortably in the end. So, I relied on Craig and his garmin to keep my pace slower in the beginning and I was hoping to pick up the pace around mile 10 to finish out strong. I had trouble with my breathing around mile 5, but was able to get it under control. So much for picking up the pace at mile 10. Around mile 8 I had major knee pain which caused me to pause for about a min or two a couple of times. I was able to shift my weight to the other leg a bit in order to work through the pain. The knee continued to be aggrevated a bit through the rest of the race, but I kept going. I know I slowed Craig down on this race. He sacrificed a good run time for himself in order to make sure my breathing got under control and stopped with me when I had to stop. So a special thanks to firstnet911 for putting up with my whiney donkey hiney...:)

The crappy rain, brutal wind and cold didn't help the situation either. I am pleased that I finished my first half marathon and looking forward to longer racing in the future, hopefully with better results.

Nutrition/Hydration. Sports beans/water. Sports beans around mile 6 and took advantage of the water and gatorade at all the stations. Sipped on Craig's supply of water from his fuel belt.

What would you do differently?:

Gotten more sleep the night before.
Post race
Warm down:

Extremely chilled at the end. Went inside to change and warm up. Calves and quads tight. Struggled with the knee a bit. Chatted with the donks and headed out for warm coffee and KOPPS burgers!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of sleep, weather conditions and just not a whole lot of mojo for the day.

Event comments:

I'll would run this event again.

Great to see so many people suck it up and race considering the crappy weather and a special thanks to the volunteers that cheered us on in the miserable cold and windy conditions.

It was great to see and chat with so many donks/BTers: Firstnet911, DJDavey, Sgoehner, Force, PJGrande, Tri-N-Spin, TriDDS, Travisvb24 and Sandivb76.

Congrats on finishing a Half Marathon. The first one is always the hardest. Many more and better times in the future. Rest up and take care of the knees.

Edit:  And sorry the weather had to suck so much.

Sista, that was a great effort in sub-optimal conditions! I was glad to be a part of the experience with you and Craig and the rest of the donks.

I fear what you could do in better circumstances!  I hope your knee is OK, as I would hate to see an injury come of this effort.

Good race.  That weather was extremely crappy for y'all.  Get some more sleep and get 'em next time.

Nice race!!  The weather and lack of sleep make it tough.

I'm really jealous of the Kopp's after the race.  That sounds like the best post-race food.

You did a great job! Congratulations , you will always remember running in the water, mud and wind for your FIRST half marathon! Way to suck it up and finish still standing after your knee pain. I am sorry that I didn't catch up to you at the finish. I am just thankful I made it to the line. Stay healthy and happy training!

Listen to you, being all-disappointed about your first half! C'mon, sistah, it's all about just knocking the first one down, especially under those kinda conditions! Great job!

Yeah you don't want some boring nice weather conditions for your first 1/2 mary. You want epic crap...and you got it. Great job fighting through all the challenges. Smart choice of a running partner there too.
