Overall Rank = 145/242
Age Group = 35-40
Age Group Rank = 19/37
Pre-race routine:

Got up awfully early and got the bike loaded. I had packed all my gear the night before so that really helped. Ate a protein bar and then headed out and picked up Jonathan at about 5:00am.
Event warmup:

Lots of stretching.
Swim
  • 29m 32s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

For my first competitive open water swim I was happy. I had bought some Aqua Sphere Seal XP goggles the night before and was not impressed. I figured I should get something with more visibility than the ones I use at the pool but they started leaking about 1/3 of the way in. I had to stop 3 or 4 times to clear the water and I'm sure it cost me some time. I managed to catch the wave in front of mine before the turn-around and that was a mess. Trying to pick a spot to pass while some people were swimming off line made it difficult.
What would you do differently?:

Get different goggles. The ones I bought are going back. Once everything started clearing out past the second buoy I settled into a comfortable pace for the rest of the race. Next time I will pick it up more.
Transition 1
  • 05m 13s
Comments:

T1 went well considering it was the first time I had to deal with removing a wetsuit in a race. After changing I started running out of transition and realized that I had forgot my gloves so I turned around and went back. That probably cost me 30 seconds or so.
What would you do differently?:

In hindsight, since I spent the bulk of my time in the aero position on the bike I really could have gone without the gloves.
Bike
  • 1h 36m 51s
  • 27 miles
  • 16.73 mile/hr
Comments:

Right before the first u-turn I started feeling a twinge in my left hamstring and that stayed with me the rest of the day. I stood up and stretched in the pedals as much as I could and stood on some of the hills to stretch out my legs. That helped a little.
What would you do differently?:

I need to work on the bike more. A 16.X AV speed won't get me any closer to a FOP finish. That said, this was within 0.1 MPH of my best average for a 20+ mile bike ride so with the wind I can't complain too much.
Transition 2
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

Good T2 for me. Nothing exciting, just took care of business and got out of there.
What would you do differently?:

Besides get even faster, not a whole lot.
Run
  • 57m 20s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

I still wouldn't consider myself a runner and my time backs that up. I was able to run the whole route without stopping though and I have come a long was since running 16 minute miles 10 months ago. The wind was killer in a few parts, especially right towards the end but everyone had to deal with it so no big complaints there. I beat my PR for a 10k by 2:39 so that was a good feeling, especially since I had the swim and bike before it.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on the run and get in some more speed work to drop my average time.
Post race
Warm down:

Ran 10 feet and got mobbed by the timing chip dude. I understand they need their chip back but I think they could have positioned themselves a little further past the finish line. I was a little shaky right after the race and he was lucky I didn't collapse on him.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think the wind cost me some time. That and I don't have access to HGH.

My "perfect scenario" goal going in was to finish in 3 hours and I missed it by 10 mins. I don't know how I would have done without the wind but I think it would have been much closer. In my mind I knew 3:15 was probably more reasonable and I beat that so I am happy. I also think I went out a little too easy on the swim and could have knocked a minute or more off that time. I also took too long to settle in on the bike and that cost me some.

Event comments:

I had three sprints under my belt since August of '07 and was able to make the jump up to the Olympic distance and finish so I am happy. I am still concentrating on the Redman Half in September and todays race let me know that I can finish it. Taking 2 weeks off (still doing light training) then starting the 20 week training schedule.

Excellent first Oly!  If you need to ride this summer to train for your HIM, just holler.  I have a great 56 mile loop mapped out that we can do, starting at Plano Pkwy/SH121.  Great numbers for the race today...sorry those pesky HIM'ers made you wait to start!

Good job on the race!! You finished right before I did. Funny about the goggles... those are the only goggles I could find that fit my face and didn't leak. Congrats on the 10k PR!!

Bro,
Great job on the OLY. We've come along way in less than a year. Now it's time for us to set our sites on the HIM.
