Champion 15211 Southern Chicago Suburbs, IL | Subject: RE: What do you think about during a race? During a running race, I pull a Scout. I'm much calmer. Where am I in the race? What is my current pace? Can I meet my goal? Am I behind? What do I have to do to catch up? Can I catch up?
During a tri, a whole different personality comes out. I'm a nervous wreck. Most of what everyone above has said, I do. If you get Triathlon Life, there is a great little column in the most recent one comparing OCD v. ADHD triathletes. I think I'm a little of both. On the swim - I've thought, "slow is smooth, smooth is fast", lengthen that stroke and pass this guy then relax and find the next pair of feet to over take. Wait a minute, why are there six?!?!?! Great, traffic jam. I wonder if I can go under them????? Out of the water to T1 - Ummm..... legs, legs would be good here. Just don't fall over!!!! And don't forget your sunglasses! Onto the bike - Come on 20 (mph that is), come on 20! Stay in aero, stay small, keep the stroke smooth. Oooooo... pretty bike. Stay focused!!! Oooooo... nice pace booty. STAY FOCUSED!!!! WTF?!?! He is 65 and he blew by me like I was standing still!!!!!! *sigh* Stay focused. Off the bike into T2 - Clean dismount and DO NOT do an endo (almost done one twice now!!). Don't forget your hat for the run. Onto the run - Dear god, if you do anything for me today, please, and I mean please, do NOT let my calves cramp up like they did in that first tri. Anything else, just no cramps. Please no cramps. Please no..... hey, she's cute and she's flying. I think I'll.... thank god, water. Hey, where did the pace boo....... How in the hell did she get all the way up there....... Great, more people passing me...... do I hear the finish line???? Yes, I'm almost done..... CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE! |

Calculating splits, when I'll be at certain mile marks, etc. It's a given. 2) Music. Whatever I listened to going to the race. Or whatever Trix and I decided to sing. 3) Who else is racing....or raced. Every once in a while, I get a Blazeman episode, or a scuba punk dealio, or a lance armstrong moment. May people have conquered much tougher challenges than me, why should I not kill it?, and last but not least.... 4) What would trixie do? You can count time between skittles. Taht' easy...If you can't motivate yourself with 'round the outside' or 'hard right' or 'If I had a Hammer' and the list goes on, what's left? AWWWWW, I love running races with you. Let's try to go fast sometime though, m'kay? Edited by trixie 2008-04-15 8:23 AM |

Elite 3519 San Jose, CA | Subject: RE: What do you think about during a race? Oddly enough, if I am doing well, I think, "wow, can't wait to write this race report"...if I am doing poorly, I usually think, "What are my BT friends going to think of me"...and yes, I think too much about crap like that. Usually what I think that really means is, that I am disappointed in myself, because anytime I havn't done as well as I wanted, all I get is support and love from BTers... Other than that, I like to get songs in my head that help with cadence...I also think about theatre a lot...Plays I have running through my head, plays I would like to direct. that type of thing |

Expert 941 WA | Subject: RE: What do you think about during a race? sounds like most people think about math. me too! i think about splits and pacing, how fast i've gone, if i keep going at this rate when will i finish, etc. if i am doing intervals, i will calculate the harmonic mean of my intervals so i can estimate my overall pace at the end. extra points if i am right. sometimes i will think about the math in my research problems. but mostly i'm just calculating pace, the whole time. it's fun. if i'm really having a hard time though, i revert to thinking about breathing evenly. |

Elite 3371 | Subject: RE: What do you think about during a race? During a tri at least it goes down like this: During the swim: "I can't wait to get out of the water." During the bike: "How the bleep is this dude passing me? I'll get them on the run" During the run: "Thats right. I caught you." |

Subject: RE: What do you think about during a race? During a tri: Swim - yay, swimmy. I like swimmy! Get out of my way, slow girl. Get out of my way, breaststroking Clydesdale whose wave went before mine but I've caught up to, and don't want to get kicked in the face by. Dang, wish I was faster, so I could be an FOPer right now. Bike - Dear God, please protect me and my bike from crashing and smattering my remains amongst shards of aluminum and carbon bits all over this road. Tri-bikes whizzing by are scary... Run -, I wish I were a better runner. Just keep running, just keep running, don't slow down and don't let the old ladies pass me...where is the finish line? Finish Line - Yay! It's over! Can I do another one tomorrow? |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: What do you think about during a race? Awesome thread. Before the race: Where's the porta potty? Heh, before the race no one knows how Swim: My heart rate is way too high for the beginning of the race, slow down. NO, speed up! This is your element. Dude! I just passed some guys. Good thing I'm kinda fast at breast stroke. I love swimming. Can't there be a swim/run divison? Is this over already?? Bike: And the torture begins. Don't look at everyone else. Race your race. Everyone is passing me. I hate hills. I need a bike coach. These people are fast. My legs are burning. Is this over yet? Run: FINALLY THE RUN! Why won't my legs move? I am usually much faster than this. What's a song I can sing in my head? My knee hurts. My knee hurts. My knee hurts. I really do like running, really. It's freaking hot out here. All I want to do is see Tom at the finish line. |

Run: dammit, why am I STILL gettting passed??? Oh well, 99 bottles of beer on the wall, 99 bottles of beer.... (found out it takes me 20 minutes to get all the way through and a comfortable pace..) Elite 3002 HURRICANE, Utah | Subject: RE: What do you think about during a race? Before a race I'm checking everyone out. Have any of you been to a sprint race and the dude takes his bike trainer out of the car and warms up before hand? Come on a sprint? "sorry Ryan didnt realize it was u till you posted your real picture" During the swim.....6 years ago when I started tri ing I just couldnt wait for it to be over! Now it doesnt bother me and I guess all I am really thinkin about it that mf'er better not elbow me or the one Im passing better not kick me! On the bike.....Im so bad...I do this for fun mostly so im out there checking out the country side and all those mens calves On the run....I tend to think of miles as minutes.....so depending on the length if there is 3 miles left then I think to myself.....you'll be all done in less then 30 min! After the race.....it's just yeah......that was so much fun |

Extreme Veteran 438 | Subject: RE: What do you think about during a race? On the swim... "Catch that girl... You're not even drafting" and "I am nearly 1/3 done..." I start that within the first minute of the swim. On the bike... "Catch up with that girl... Oh my God this pass is taking too long... I AM drafting." and I count all the people I pass and try to make a mental note and I tell them they will catch me on the run... because they all inevitably pass me on the run. On the run... I say out loud "See, I told you you would catch me on the run... you go girl"... I say that I am done in 1/5 done in 7 more minutes... or 4/5 done and 7 more minutes. I always tell people on course that they are amazing. I don't generally cheer on the guys... they usually leave me speechless with hotness. Usually. Besides, I am not trying to compare my times with them. |

Expert 974 Encinitas | Subject: RE: What do you think about during a race? Here is my thought process during my Olympic distance race 2 weekends ago. Swim: Start: 1, 2, 3 breath, 1, 2, 3, breath etc. 5 minutes in: Dang, the pack already dropped me, ok, stay calm, just focus on good form. 10 minutes in: Doing ok, I think there are still a few people behind me 15 minutes in: Where the heck am I? 20 minutes in: There goes the pack from the wave behind me, try to draft off some of them! 25 minutes in: I'm lost again, where is that dang bouy? 30 minutes in: All this water I am swollowing sure tastes bad, I hope I don't puke on the bike. 35 minutes in: There goes the pack from 2 waves behind me, I don't care though, finally almost done! Transition 1: Why do I have to have so much stuff!?! I really hope I didn't forget anything! Bike: Ok, so I really sucked the big one in the water, need to make some time up, push!!! Faster, faster, faster stay tight, knees in CONE!!!! swerve, wait, no time, don't fall!! I hope no one just saw me run over that cone... Ok, need to keep the head up Faster, faster, faster Careful, don't burn out Feeling good, good pace keep it hard but don't let my muscles burn too much. Ooh, she's cute, speed up while I pass her so she thinks I'm fast. How much longer? Still feeling good, good pace, keep it even Haha, I see you this time cone! Transition 2: shoes, feet, where is the exit? Run: Alright, good solid bike, now it's time to run down as many people as I can. Fast and smooth, stay relaxed Ooh, she's cute fast and smooth, stay relaxed Ooh, another couple victims fast and smooth, stay relaxed ooh, she's really cute, be sure to clap her in after I finish fast and smooth, stay relaxed Almost done, pick it up, catch these people ahead of me home stretch, all out, break their will, make them want to cry #%&**%($&$^%*$ Kill!!!! |
