Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:30am and got ready. Had a bowl of cream of wheat and then putzed around reading the board here until it was time to head over to the event.
Event warmup:

Walked/wogged about the parking lot near the starting line for 5-10 minutes.

Comments:

I knew going into this event that it was going to be hot. The forecasted high had been bouncing around all week to be somewhere between 90-95 degrees. By the time we got started at 7:45am, it was already in the upper 70's to low 80's. By the time I finished, it was 85 with a heat index of nearly 90.

The worst part was on the eastbound portion of each lap. Since it was still early in the morning, the sun was still low in the sky, so there wasn't much relief from my hat. It was pretty much just shining right into my eyes.

There was one water station on the westbound portion of the 5k course that was about 2/3rds way around on the lap. So, we were able to get water at about 1.2 miles and again at around 2.7 miles. I did take some water both times I passed the station. I drank all of it the first time, but then felt a bit queasy afterwards. I only took a couple of good sips the 2nd time around and I was fine with that.

I did a wog combo of 4 mins walking followed by 1 min slow jog for the first 1.5 miles. After that I decided to just stick with walking since it was so hot. Even by the 1.5 mile mark, I was already starting to wheeze pretty badly from where I'd been sick recently coupled with breathing in the very dry hot air. I was really hoping to stick with my wog combo for the whole distance, but decided better safe than sorry given the conditions.
What would you do differently?:

The only thing I think that would have made a difference is the heat. Since I don't really have any control over that, I guess I wouldn't really have done anything differently.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around the finish line festivities for a bit and watched for one of my friends to finish. I waited for about 10 minutes, but never saw her. Based on our later conversation, I must have just missed her by about a minute.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat.

Way to tough out the conditions Melissa

Adjusting pace for current weather conditions is a hard skill to master but it seems like you played it very smart.

Will be some great experience for for upcoming triathons

You did FANTASTIC. That was a helluva lot faster than I went on the same day--way to keep going in the heat and despite your recent illness. You are a trooper, and such a beautiful woman.

Thanks for the encouragement, gang! It really means a lot as someone still just starting out...especially as slow as I am! LOL

Mixie - no, I didn't even go into the park. We did get half price admission coupons in our goodie bags, but I had already made plans with a gang of my girlfriends for the day and did that instead.

I forgot to mention in my race report that this event was a fundraiser for the Speech and Language Development Center in Buena Park. They offer services for children and young adults with language/learning/developmental disorders. During the opening festivities, a group of hearing-impaired young adults were on hand to sign along with the singing of the National Anthem. There were also several of the students out on the course both participating and volunteering. It was pretty cool and reminded me what a great cause this event was in helping enrich their lives.

Great job out there! It's always a LOT tougher in the heat. It's funny, the ads for that race made it sound like you would be racing through the park itself, not a neighborhood nearby! Congrats on doing a great job!

Thanks, J. I think part of the 10k course did go through the park, but none of the 5k did. Based on the 5k course, I would have called it the Buena Park Downtown 5k. LOL

Not much you can do about the heat, except get through it as best as you can.  Great job, Mel.

Great job out there!  Very smart move to walk when you started feeling bad, too early in the season to mess up your health for any race!
