Tempe, Arizona
United States
Ironman North America
93F / 34C
Sunny
Total Time = 16h 42m 3s
Overall Rank = 1647/
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 229/266
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at about 4:00, ate a couple bagels and a banana, then headed on down to Tempe.
Swim
  • 1h 16m 23s
  • 3862 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

Had a pretty good swim overall. I got kicked in the face once pretty hard but the rest of the swim went well. Didn't push it to hard just tried to be smooth through the water.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much, this swim felt pretty good.
Transition 1
  • 06m 33s
Comments:

I wasn't in a big hurry and wanted to make sure I had everything ready for the bike ride.
Bike
  • 8h 16m 5s
  • 112 miles
  • 13.55 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a terrible bike ride. The wind was kicking my ass as soon as I left the transition area. About halfway into the second lap I knew any time goal I had was out the window and I just wanted to finish.
What would you do differently?:

Be a stronger rider!
Transition 2
  • 25m 26s
Comments:

My legs didn't seem to be working so well when I came into transition so I took my time getting ready for the run. Drank some ice water and gatorades in the tent. Finally got ready to move out.
Run
  • 6h 37m 38s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 15m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Headed out of transition at a slow run and felt pretty good, for about 200 yards, then my calves started to cramp up really bad. That’s was how it was for the rest of the time, every time I would start to run it hit so I just walked at as fast of pace as possible. In the end this strategy (and some great support from friends and volunteers) got me across the finish line. At my constant quick walking pace I was keeping up with people who were running and then walking and it left my with enough energy to run the last little bit across the finish line.
Post race
Event comments:

This race did not go at all how I planned. The wind really tore me up on the bike leg and the marathon was a walk-a-thon. That said, overall this was an incredible experience, from the energy of the race to the fantastic volunteers I'm so glad I entered and finished this race even if it was many hours longer than planned. A special thanks to the AZ Tri Club and ESCKTC people who were out there all day and night and helped motivate me to finish.

Great Job Travis! It was cool to see you finish. I had just told my friend Mike that you were still out there and then 2 seconds later... there you are.

Travis, You did it!

We live here and it was hot for us. This day would have to be the hottest of the year.

Who cares how you got there, you ran down the chute to the finish. Nice!
