Pre-race routine:

On Friday my back started giving me trouble. It was spasming and I was in a lot of pain. I was questioning whether I'd even be able to race. Malinda picked me up on Saturday and we drove to Dallas for packet pick up. When we got there they were already picking up the expo so no shopping for us. That's probably a good thing. We checked into the Marriott which had a great view of the swim course and transition. We had dinner with some training buddies from Austin then we went back to the hotel.
I got up at 4:45am and had a bagel with PB and a banana. I decided to try and race and pull out at any time I thought I couldn't go on. I was okay with that decision after all it was just a training day for IMCDA.
Event warmup:

Not much of a warm up unless you consider putting a wetsuit on a warm up. I do.
Swim
  • 36m 44s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

We jumped into the water from a boat dock and then five seconds later we were off. I just tried to relax and think about my day ahead. The only time my back gave me problems was when I was sighting. The women started first so the men came through at the turnaround. I didn't get run over like I thought I would. I'm pretty sure the course was short.
What would you do differently?:

Find some feet to draft off of.
Transition 1
  • 04m 43s
Comments:

It was a pretty long run to transition. I think the worst part was that my feet were cold and the pebbled concrete killed my feet. It took a little longer than I wanted to get my wetsuit off. I put my arm warmers around my wrists so I could pull them up once I got going. I was kind of cold but the sun warmed me up fine. Forgot my sunglasses.
What would you do differently?:

Not forget my sunglasses
Bike
  • 3h 00m
  • 54 miles
  • 18.00 mile/hr
Comments:

It was super windy day which made this a little tough. I knew there would be wind so I was ready for it mentally. The first ten miles were hard but once I got into a groove I just focused on my nutrition and reminded myself this was a training day. It was nice having it be a two loop course so I knew what to expect the second time around. I started having pain in my left knee and was ready to get off. I was really happy with my time.
What would you do differently?:

I don't think I'd do anything different.
Transition 2
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

I was pretty much in the middle of transition so easy to spot. Got my shoes, hat, sunglasses and was off. I forgot my Garmin but wasn't bothered by it too much.
What would you do differently?:

I forgot my Garmin but actually think it was a good thing. I didn't obsess over splits and just ran.
Run
  • 2h 09m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

I stopped for a potty break and then started on my run. When I looked down at my watch I knew that if I could keep a 10min pace then I might be able to break 6 hours. My first loop was great. I alternated water and Accelerade. I also had a one gel. The second loop was a little harder but I just kept thinking about my Ironman in June and it helped me focus on moving forward. I also saw some friends out on the course and that always makes me smile. At the last aid station I looked down at my watch and realized I was going to make it under 6 hours!! So awesome.
What would you do differently?:

This was a very good run for me. I probably could have taken in one more gel.
Post race
Warm down:

Finished with a huge smile. I had some BT friends cheer me on which was so nice. Thanks Jill, Sue and Reagan! This was a huge PR for me. My time for Longhorn was 6:23. So that's almost 30 minutes. Going into this race I thought I'd have to pull out because of my back but once I got going I felt great. I watched my friends come in and then got a massage.
I even earned some hardware! I was first in the Athena division and would have been first in my age group.

Event comments:

Volunteers were really nice, not enough of them though. I had a good time.

Robin, you need to edit your overall time! You finished in under 6 hours, not under 7! You short changed yourself! Great job out there, you really did awesome. I can't wait to watch everyone online for IMCdA!

WOW! Great job! I'm sure that gave you a huge mental boost for your IM coming up. That's terrific that you got first in your AG and got some hardware.

Going from wondering if you could race, seeing it as a training day, then kicking butt and setting a new PB by over 20' and winning Athena and would have won your AG...it was a great day!

Congrats..that is huge plus great training day for IMCDA!

Super Congratulations on an awesome PR on a windy day when you were having back and knee pain! Great job!!! (Also on the 1st in division)

You will do awesome at CDA ... good luck with the rest of your training!

P.S. Did you know (you probably do) that this qualifies you for USAT Halfmax Nationals?
