When do you start training in the lakes around here? I'm getting antsy to do some OWS training but seems too cold yet even with a wetsuit and neoprene cap. Has anyone been in yet?

I did my first OWS on Sunday during a sprint. It was a real eye opener. I had a full wetsuit, but still had problems keeping my head in the cold water. I tried to swim like Tarzan & was gassed a third of the way in. I didn't stick to my original plan & payed for it.

I think I'll stick to the pool for a few more weeks before & go back outside to swim. It was quite humbling.

Even with my new wetsuit, I'm not getting in until Moses Lake in June...:-)

Did you know that there is fish and stuff in there???

The fish and stuff don't bother me. It's the plastic bags that do

Ooh I don't care about fish or plastic bags - Lake Washington and Long Lake where I train are filled with WEEDS! Even out in the middle its gross and really distracting!

I live on Lake Wa, and your post is EXACTLY why I just want to go in when its race day. I think other people being around will scare away the nastiness!

After being stung by weird sea creatures recently on vacation, I am AFRAID of the water. Interestingly, the swim is my strong suit!

I went by American Lake today & checked it out. It is nice, the water is clear & there's a line of 5 mph buoys that would be great to swim around. The water was still cold, but I'm going to head out there in a few weeks.

This site lists lake temps, but it doesn't start posting until May.  I couldn't find anything else on the internet about any lake temps yet.....since it is currently SNOWING outside, it's probably too soon to hop into the lake. Once it seems reasonable, I am totally ready to test out the new wetsuit!  I have access to a great swim place and jetskis at Lake Sammamish, so hopefully I will be doing LOTS of OWS this year!!  I hope to have my hubby or friends or whomever just follow me along on the jetski as I swim until I can swim no more, and then drive me home!

Lake water is pretty comfortable now. No more stinging face. I have done 4 OWS in the last 6 days (each 20-30 minutes) and it has been great. I'm freaking about doing the one mile swim at Moses Lake so have been swimming every chance I can get. I have been trying to learn to pace myself properly. That is the biggest transition in my opinion when hitting open water. Anybody else enjoying the lakes now?

Lake Washington is FREEZING. Good grief.  Brrr . Man Luke was right.  The smaller lakes are much better. Hoping to get into either Beaver Lake or Lake Meridian this weekend.  I just picked up my brand spanking new wetsuit. I needs to break it in.

Let me know how BEAVER LAKE IS!!!

I swam in Beaver Lake on Sunday wearing my full wetsuit and two caps....it was lovely. What a gorgeous lake to be in...no motorboats.  The fishermen on the shore shot us a few glances as we suited up and swam out between their lines....but then we just swam down the middle of the lake.  It was really peaceful and not icy cold like Lake WA or Sammamish. I feel sorry for those doing the Lake Samm tri this weekend, that lake has not warmed up yet!!  (I did ride the bike route twice last night, it was fun.)

Anyway, for all interested parties, there are a group of us including Triathlynne, meeting at 10 AM on Sunday at BL Park to swim.  PM me if you want to join and I'll get you my cell number in case you get lost or whatever.  Otherwise just show up!  It's hard to miss a group of people in wetsuits on the shore!

-Leslie
