Does anyone know about them? How do they work? Are they allowed even? Can I swim and bike and have someone else do the running? I really want to know.

I've never been in a triathlon. I want to, but my ortho says no running.

You can have 2 or 3 individuals complete the tri. I don't know if all races have them, but most I have looked at do. You have to sign everyone up when you register. I am doing the bike leg of a tri next May (partly as a favor and partly just to get some experience prior to my own first full tri).

Never done one, but... I think it depends on the race, but I would guess most do allow relays. You can just contact the race director or look on the website to see if they are allowed. Typically you pay more, and I think the way they usually work is there is one person per leg. But I could be wrong. I think the way it works is that you switch the championchip/race number (like passing the baton) in the transition area. So when you come back from the bike, your relay runner is waiting at your bike rack.

Good luck, I definitely recommend it.

Runner moves the chip from swimmer to biker. Swimmer moves chip from biker to runner. Races should advertise if they have a category for relay teams. Some allow co-ed relay teams, or all-masters teams, etc.

Hi Chris,

Relays are a great way to get started in Triathlons. I put together a group from work, and we challanged the other divisions - it was a great motivator, and a great way to experiance the event without being prepared to do all three legs.

The race website or flyers should mention whether tbey are set up for relays. Many of the smaller, local races do not use "chips", but you simply tag the team member in the transition area, and off they go.

Welcome to the BT Board - I hope you enjoy the group and the information available here.

I volunteered at a tri last year. The relays had an area - maybe about 10'x10' - marked off in the transition area where you had to give your chip to the next person on your team. And you can't have your bike ready to go. The biker has to run back to the racks to get his bike AFTER getting his chip.

Seems like there's always about 5 or so teams doing each of the local tri's I've been to.
