Out on my ride today I got to thinking about IMKY 2007 and wondering at what point the pros blew by me on the bike course. Since the bike course is a two-loop course, at some point they must of passed me on their second loop (while I was still on my first loop).
This year I'm gonna look for them (the lead pack of pros) and ride with them for as long as I can (probably about 50 yards!). Like someone said, triathlon is one of the few sports where amatures can be out on the same course at the same time as professional. I figure I can probably predict about what mile (+/- 5 miles) when they will blow by me. So here is the math problem:
Pros start 10 minutes before AGers.
Because this is a TT start, I started about 10 minutes after the AG start.
The pros finsihed the swim in about 50.
I finished the swim in 90 minutes.
Assume the pros spend 5 minutes less time in T1 than I did.
By time I exited T1, the pros has been on the road for 65 minutes.
The lead pro averaged about 25 mph. 65 minutes @ 25 mph = 27 miles
The loop starts 33 miles out and is about 27 miles around the loop.
I averaged 15 mph. So it would take me 2:12 to get to the start of the first loop.
Meanwhile, the pros are cruising at 25 mph for this 2:12 and this would put them another 55 miles out. So now they are 27 + 55 = 82 miles in front of me.
Dang, the are 5 miles short of finishing their second loop by the time I start my first loop.
Therefore, I will never see them!
OK, never mind.
