Subject: IMKY Math Problem

Out on my ride today I got to thinking about IMKY 2007 and wondering at what point the pros blew by me on the bike course.  Since the bike course is a two-loop course, at some point they must of passed me on their second loop (while I was still on my first loop).

This year I'm gonna look for them (the lead pack of pros) and ride with them for as long as I can (probably about 50 yards!).  Like someone said, triathlon is one of the few sports where amatures can be out on the same course at the same time as professional.  I figure I can probably predict about what mile (+/- 5 miles) when they will blow by me.  So here is the math problem:

Pros start 10 minutes before AGers.

Because this is a TT start, I started about 10 minutes after the AG start.

The pros finsihed the swim in about 50.

I finished the swim in 90 minutes.

Assume the pros spend 5 minutes less time in T1 than I did.

By time I exited T1, the pros has been on the road for 65 minutes.

The lead pro averaged about 25 mph.  65 minutes @ 25 mph = 27 miles

The loop starts 33 miles out and is about 27 miles around the loop.

I averaged 15 mph.  So it would take me 2:12 to get to the start of the first loop.

Meanwhile, the pros are cruising at 25 mph for this 2:12 and this would put them another 55 miles out.  So now they are 27 + 55 = 82 miles in front of me.

Dang, the are 5 miles short of finishing their second loop by the time I start my first loop.

Therefore, I will never see them!

OK, never mind.

Actually, not to burst your bubble, (and believe me, I am not a math wizz by any means) there is the possibility that they will have already started the second loop by the time you hit the bike. So, you may not see them

Oops, just finished reading your thread.

I got to see the women pro's go by. I couldn't have stayed with them for a 50 yard sprint. I also got to see Nina Kraft when she stopped on the bike, her boyfriend was with her & she was just sitting on her bike crying on his shoulder. Apparently she was having a lot of back trouble. Wild moment to see while doing an IM!

What if you just went a little faster?

Yeah, that's a good idea.  Or I need to find an IM with bigger loops.  Or maybe 3 loops....doesn't IMAZ have 3 loops?  hmmmm

So here's the new math problem:  Given that pros start 20 minutes before me, finish the swim in 40 minutes less time and spend 5 minutes less in T1, how fast do I have to bike in order for me to be on the first loop by the time the pros start thier second loop?

Wait... nevermind. You'd have to be out on the first loop before they started their second loop, right? That would mean 33+27miles = 60mi / 25mph = 2.4 hrs [2h 24m] of pro cycling time to get out to your first loop. Actually a little less than that since you want to beat them there. That should help you figure out how fast you would need to go to get there before them.

Also - you could improve your swim by 5-10 min by the time the race rolls around which would help. I'm guessing going faster in each event is probably already part of your plan though, so it doesn't really matter if I mention that or not

You were bored in the pool, weren't you?

When I came on the run at IMWI, I came out for my first loop when the leaders were just starting their 2nd loop.  I kept up stride for stride with one of the pros...for about 6 steps

I started to get passed by the pros on my way out of La Grange (first loop). I do not remember what his name was, but he was on a blue giant and was very polite and apologized for almost bumping me when a car almost plowed all of us over.
