Are they the same or since the geometry is different so is the size?  For example: would a 54 tri bike be the same fit as a 54 road bike?

Well, trust me I'm no expert, but I just came from the bike shop and tested out two road bikes.

On Trek models, I need a 60" frame, whereas on Specialized models I needed a 58".

So I guess my answer is if you're looking at a different brand, the size could be different, but if you're sticking to the same brand then wait for another answer.

Partial threadjack:

Some frames I have noticed come in S, M, L, rather than a measurement in cm.  Do these sizes cover certain ranges of measurements?
