Ok Runningjayhawk,You look like you are an expert at this tri stuff. I am new at this tri, actually I have only done 1 and that was the danskin in Pleasant prairie. I'm signed up for the du and I am hearing that we will be having 35mph headwind. Can you give any advice on the bike. The hills are freaking me out.

Okay...that was funny. Thanks for the laugh. The other folks in this thread are far more experienced in the world of triathlon.

As far as advice on the bike goes...this is by and far my weakest discipline. So I may very well find myself walking up one or two of the bigger hills. I'm all about dropping into the granny gear and just spinning my buns off. My only advice is stay in forward motion. And just remember...about 90% of the climbing comes in the first 2/3's of the course. So enjoy the downhill portion at the end!

Oh...and I believe I read something about the "Jesus Saves" barn...although I can't remember if that's the point where most of the climbing ends, or if that's the cut-off area before you get hit with the sag wagon after 12. Hopefully one of the veterans can chime in on that one. Thoughts, everyone?

But honestly, don't let the hills freak you out. I was supposed to do Galena last year and literally had myself worked up to the point where I bailed completely and ended up cheering my husband on all day (I used the excuse of that I was still recovering from an injury, when in fact I would've been okay to compete). We're all out there going at it together.

Just tune out all the information you have about weather. There's nothing you can do about it. Just because there's wind doesn't mean you're not going to race. So...ignore it and just go out there, do your thing and have fun.

Oh...and bring a few bucks to get a beer after the race!

Jesus Saves is one of the last big hills, but not the last, I think you have two maybe three after the hill.

My only advice for the DU, is MAKE SURE YOU HAVE TWO PAIRS OF SHOES (if you use clipless peddles).

And SAVE something for the second run, cause you head right up this

A little advise for T1. Make sure to place flip flops near the entry point to T1. Last year T1 was in a gravel lot and it really sucked to go from the swim to my bike barefoot.

Two different transitions.....you need a pair of shoes in each transition.

I'm no Runningjayhawk, but I can offer one piece of advice. Keep pedaling. Forget about how long it takes. Spin lots and use your downhills to build speed.

Edit: I just saw that this is this weekend. GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE RACERS!!!

Ho-boy, a "what if" question. I was testing out my smaller chain ring (the one that I've used perhaps three times) on some hills, basically pedway overpasses, just to see how low my gearing got. Well, I found out that if I come to a stop on a hill, that I can't get going again, even if I run along side and try to hop on and clip in. I just lack the coordination.

So, what happens if I run out of gears on a hill? Any tips? I probably can't zig-zag my way up a steep section without annoying the people behind me. Does anyone walk up the hills?

Thanks!

I am sure there will be some people walking up the, they are not easy hills at all. So if you need to no worries at least you are out there giving it your best! Just besure to unclip before you run out of speed otherwise it might hurt. The hills out there are pretty hard to train for because where i am there are no hills that big so I did the best I could. Also it seems like the winds came down a little only 14mph winds now lol

I ALSO FORGOT the most important tip. MAke sure you leave your bike in T1 in your smallest gear, the steep hill right out ouf T1 is basically at the mount line and you can't switch gears in time.

You will provide lost of laughs if you tip over....

Don't worry - people will walk a hill if needed.

Thanks for the gearing tip!

11hr...I'm probably going to have to walk up some of the hills. And last year my husband said there were always a bunch of folks walking it up the steeper/longer hills.

There's a video on YouTube of last year's tri and in the footage there's a guy walking his bike up the first hill out of transition. I wouldn't be surprised if a handful of folks elect to do that. (I can't lie...it's crossed my mind, too.)

In this event if I place in the top 10% of my age group do I qualify for age group nationals? since this is a USAT sanctioned event?

1. Top 10% of your age group in any USAT sanctioned event having taken place between 7/1/07 and 9/14/08.

It does not say how long the race has to be just that it has to be a USAT sanctioned event and I was just wondering....

Last year I saw a ton of people walking up the hills. I think the hardest was the first one out of transition.

Did anyone on here who did this before get the exact same number as before? I did and I found it weird. Hopefully I have better luck! Anyone else in the red swim cap group (9:03)?

Thanks guys, that's reassuring. If you see a tall guy walking a litespeed with a brown Brooks up a hill, give him some encouragement.

Best of luck to all the athletes!
