Subject: Singlespeed bike for sprint tri?

Just curious- I'm training for my first tri (a sprint in late June/early July). I've been riding a singlespeed road bike for several months now and have become very comfortable with the gear ratio on mostly flat courses. I'm actually planning on converting it to a 12-speed for the race, but just out of curiousity...

Has anyone ridden a singlespeed bike for the cycling portion of a triathlon? Assuming the course is fairly flat and short, can anyone see any major disadvantage in riding a sprint tri on one speed?

I've got a fixie and at some point will ride it in a triathlon. You wouldn't really have any additional disadvantage over a geared bike that you don't already have (you'll spin it out going down hills and have to grind going up). But...you'll be the coolest kid at the race.

People over on ST talk occasionally about riding a fixed gear bike at an IM race...

I've been training (and did a mini sprint, 2.5 miles) on my mtn bike which is all gunked up and only gives me two speeds.  I'm dreaming of my speeds once I have the road bike ready!

USAT rules (plus safety & common sense) require a working brake on each wheel, otherwise don't see why not.

Singlespeed during a tri, that is awesome!!!!! I am actually having a single speed road bike being built right now out of spare parts. It is going to be pretty sweet. Should be ready this week! Never even thought about riding it during a tri... until now!

One speed is all you need!

Thanks for the feedback. Once I pick out a race, I'll try to get an idea of how hilly the course will be and go from there.

you talking about a single speed or a fixed gear? You certainly won't have the option of a higher gear to rest your legs, or take on a climb. Might not be the smartest idea, but I like it. Would take alot more balls to do that rather than convert it to a geared bike. Go for it!!!!

I have a frameset w/ fork that I am in the process of putting together a "frankenstein" fixie. Mainly need a rear wheel/hub right now. Money is a little tight so I am putting it off since I just got a new TT bike. Soon I will have the fixie together. If you are enough of a rider to pull it off, I am jealous.

My rear der malfunctioned in my first tri (a sprint), and I did the entire big leg without ever shifting gears. It was a very flat course, and I managed fine, but didn't go nearly as fast as I could have. You should be fine, esp on a flat course.

I think you will be at a disadvantage on the SS but if it makes the race more fun. Go for it.

Here is a guy that can beat the geared riders in the dirt on an SS http://29ercrew.com/jesse/04/20/358/.His younger bro(Darkness) can run a 5K under 15 minutes. It would be cool to see these guys do an off-road duathlon.

I recently outfitted the bike in question with a set of aerobars and rode it yesterday for the first time since. I got pretty confident with them until about mile 16. I was confronted with a short (but steep) hill and boldly decided to try getting out of the saddle while holding the bar extensions. Mistake. Decelerated rapidly, lost control, and ate it (at about 5 mph, fortunately).

Long story short- I'm thinking gears may be the way to go, at least for my first time out.

is it a single speed, or fixie?  that makes a difference. I'd be ok with the ss, notsomuch with the fixie for your first tri. That'd just be brutal.

Had you gone back to the drops you would have been fine. Just because they are there does not mean you must use them all the time.

Yeah, I guess hindsight is always 20/20, right? Lesson learned. Getting used to riding with aerobars is important, but not at the expense of the skin on your legs.

The bike is a SS, by the way, not a fixie. Built up from an old steel Peugeot frame (ironically, a Peugeot "Triathlon". Solid, not too heavy, and fits like a glove.

I have raced a mtb before in a sprint tri and was fine. I believe you'll be fine on your singlespeed.
Do a few event like it and then decide if it is worth to you to upgrade
