Overall Rank = 110/371

Age Group Rank = 25/63
Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 7AM to a house full of fun people; I drank coffee, ate oatmeal and a banana. I had to pack some of the stuff up in the car since we were not returning to the rental house; most of my race stuff was together. I grabbed two trash bags, and an extra plastic bag on the way out. I used the plastic bag to keep my running shoes & socks in, which was put inside the trash bag w/ all of my other stuff to keep it dry.

I ate a cliff bar and drank a little bit of gatorade before the race.
Event warmup:

I did not really warm up due to the heavy rain. I stretched a little bit and I did get in the water and swim about 50 meters.
Swim
  • 16m 46s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

When I started I decided I would start at the front of the pack and let all of the fast people just swim over/around me. This was Dck's advice; and the theory is that it is better to have people pass you than you having to pass people, plus you could find someone to draft.

Since swimming is my weak point I found no one to draft off of, I was not even looking for that. My only goal was to stay calm in the water, and if I could, pick up the pace after the first 200 meters.

In the first 100 meters my heart rate was out of control, I had to roll on my back for about 3 strokes, I got a few good breaths in then went back to free style, my main focus was staying in control of my breathing and I did well. I rounded all of the bouy's very tight, I only went off course slightly once, not by much and it was not a big deal. I was able to get into a groove around 300 meters or so, and I was good to go from there. After I rounded the 2nd yellow bouy I was even able to focus on my swimming technique rather than breathing.
What would you do differently?:

I would not start in the front of the pack, I would let a few people in front of me so they don't have to climb over me; I think some of the action there led to my panic in the water & loss of breat. I would still start fairly close to the front, but not right in the front; I'm just not that fast (YET). I also want to get a loop sewn into my wet suit to make it easier to un-velcro from the neck, just grab and pull, I seemed to have played w/ that a bit.

Also I need to get ear plugs, I was dizzy in transition.
Transition 1
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

Transition was pretty straight forward, putting the shoes on in the mud sucked because I did not want muddy feet in my shoes, that is too uncomfortable during the bike. I did a good job of running w/ the bike and jumping on it while running.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 51m 18s
  • 18 miles
  • 21.05 mile/hr
Comments:

The biking was fun; even in the rain. During several of the down hill segments when I picked up really good speed the rain felt like pebbles. I paced myself, I should have gone BTTW.
What would you do differently?:

I should have pushed myself hard the entire time, I really only pushed on the uphills and downhill portions, on the flats I was not working hard enough. I thought I needed to reserve more for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

I had my shoes & socks in a bag within the trash bag, so they were nice and dry. That was a mental lift even though they were soaked in about 3 or four minutes.

I forgot my race belt; thankfully Z was there to yell at me and remind me. I only lost about 5 seconds on that one.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure I remember my race belt.
Run
  • 23m 50s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt horrible to start the run; plus it was up hill for the first mile. Mostly it was stomach cramps, probably due to a poor diet the day and night before. Plus I had to p!ss really bad, but I did not want to stop. Finally at about mile two I was able to relieve myself while running; it really did not matter w/ all of the rain.
What would you do differently?:

Eat better the day before, not eat a cliff bar before the start. Take gu before instead, and hydrate better.
Post race
Warm down:

Stand around in the rain watching folks cross the finish line; at first the rain was felt great, then it was a bit cold, then it was really cold; which was about the time I left.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Practice, experience, diet & hydration.

Dude.  That was your first tri ever.  Top third overall.  That is amazing.  If you want to kick a$$ in this sport, it's yours for the taking.

First OWS race, a day after your first OWS and you did great.  You adjusted on the fly and did what you had to.

All around, just a great job.

Great job - you did the bike potion of the race on your wife's road bike and still averaged over 21mph? That is just crazy. Nice job on the swim and run too!

Awesome job - looking forward to watching you race more!

Oh, there is nothing wrong with the "wife's" road bike. I have some good CAAD7 machine there, i wish i was worthy of it

You are awesome (and I don't just hand that word out to anyone).  Earplugs do the trick if you want to stop the dizziness.

yeah, it is pretty scary that you were on Z's non-fitting roadie and pulled off a 21 MPH in your first tri.  I am hoping that we are more than 5 years apart... this way, I will never be in your age group.  How old are you, again?

Really incredible job... looking forward to seeing you make a mockery of triathlon in the future.
