I am doing the Racing for Recovery Half Ironman in 7.5 weeks (my first HIM).  My long bikes are now 40-65 miles so its time to start practicing nutrition.  I am trying to figure out how many calories I should be targeting during practice.   I am 200lbs (90kg), and based on my current training, estimate that the race will take me 6:10.  Here are my calculations:

Needed Calories:
   Swim: 12 C/min * 45min = 540C
   Bike: 15.3 C/min * 190min = 2900C
   Run:  15 C/min * 130min = 1950C
Total Calories needed = 5400C

The bike calories seem high but I have gotten similar results from different sources.  I am figuring that I can get 1000 of these calories from fat stores (~20%), and that glycogen stores will account for another 2000 calories.  That means I need to eat 2400 calories before/during the race.

Normal pre-race breakfast: 300C
Pre-swim gel:               90C
5 gels during the run:     450C

That leaves 1500C  to consume on the bike (about 500C per hour).  Does this seem reasonable?  Feel free to challenge any and all of the above assumptions.

Thanks.

You'll have trouble taking in 500 calories an hour during the bike.

Target 250-350 that will provide a decent range to start testing. Much more than that and you'll have issues

are you attempting to replenish all the calories that you will burn during the race?
so you won't be hungry and needing any of the post race food..??

I think you have too many unknowns to try to calculate the exact amount you need on the bike (without testing, the # of calories expended could be off significantly, you don't really know how much you get from fat stores and recent research suggest we may have higher glycogen stores than 2,000).

I would focus instead on trying to figure out what you body can handle at race pace.  250 cal. per hour seems to work pretty well for me, and 300 is starting to push it.

I'm ~190 and based on what works for me, I would:

1)  Eat more for breakfast, 3 hours before start take in ~700-1000+ cal.  I like mostly liquids--a couple Ensure Plus is 700cal right there.

2)  Take as much as you can comfortably on the bike--probably 250-400 per hour

3)  Take as little as possible on the run--probably 100-250 per hour
