Getting ready for last tri of the year--Olympic Distance at Bonelli Park next Sunday (10/5). Got laid off from my job on Tuesday (not really unexpected and I hated the job, frankly), so I have lots of training time at the moment.

Todd - sorry about the job. I saw that you were doing a lot of workouts at 11 am and I thought you took the week off! Good luck with the new job search and good luck in the last tri of the season!

Todd- so sorry about the job...hope something comes up soon for you.

I had my first DNF today. The swim was actually pretty good (for me). 33 minutes to do 0.75 mi (1320 yds). BUT then I went and somehow crashed on my bike. It was weird because I wasn't going super fast, just coming out of a twisty part of the ride and onto a straightaway, but I was too close to the side of the road and as I tried to get over to the left, someone comes by me on the left and I couldn't get over. OMG, I went right into this rocky ditch with a giant boulder right ahead of me and must have crashed into it because I went over the handlebars, felt the bike hit my helmet and my right shoulder and leg must've taken the brunt of it because I my calf is the size of a grapefruit and my shoulder has some major road rash. I sat there for awhile to make sure nothing was broken...it actually felt worse to walk than to ride, so I just finished the last 8 miles. I actually thought I might be able to run the 5 mile run but when I went to step down on my right calf...omg, the pain was shooting through my whole right leg.

I hope that it's just severely bruised and swollen. Lying here with the leg elevated and icing it. Ibuprofen. Guess I need a new helmet. Mine has a big gouge in it now. Thank goodness it wasn't any worse.

Just wanted to share. Sucks because I really have been feeling great on the run lately! I think this is my last tri of the year. Good luck to everyone who is still racing this year.

Kim - Definitely get a new helmet! In fact, some helmet companies will send you a brand new helmet either for cheap or for free if you send them your broken one/damaged one. I have heard they take the helmets and analyze the damage from the accident.

I am glad that you are ok! Keep icing and elevating and hopefully everything heals up quickly

Ouch Kim, hope you are feeling better today and there are no major injuries. After you heal up the bike rash becomes cool battle scars )  Rest yourself up and then we can hit some winter maintanence program to come back strong next year!

peace, John

2 days later and feeling alot better. Still hard to walk but the swelling is going down. This is a good time to catch up on some rest.

Good luck on your tri, Todd.

Well, one silver lining to being out of work: training whenever the heck I feel like it.

Hope y'all have a great weekend!

I'm increasing my run mileage quite a bit but I'm certainly allowing myself many more cross training and recovery days so I feel more relaxed.  Still kind of battling an extra 5 pounds though so adding some strength training and trying to be a bit more strict on the diet (although we were really bad tonight with the pizza while we watch Mizzou whip up on Nebraska!)

How's everyone doing?  Tapering training for off-season?  I, for one, am doing good getting my long runs in but I'm really struggling to get mid-week training in right now.  I'm VERY busy at work, with travel, home activities, etc... I'm a type A perfectionist as it is so I really struggle when I'm not able to stay on top of everything!  I could really really go for a run right about now

Moving into run-focused part of the year for me...or I would be if I hadn't come down with a head cold after my race on Sunday. Felt a little sad to put the wetsuit away for the winter, actually. I've got one 10K and a half mary left between now and February. November will be my first month since January with no racing at all. (Probably a good thing, since I'm still fighting this recurring calf/Achilles problem.) LA Marathon got moved up two weeks, so I've got to keep upping the long runs on the weekends, though...my wife is planning to enter it as well for her first marathon, so I'm doing training sessions with her once or twice a week.

Started to think more seriously about race calendar next year...but I've got to temper my enthusiasm until I find a job. I want to do Wildflower Long Course, but beyond that (and the marathon) all bets are off for now.

Speaking of potential income, be sure to watch me on Jeopardy! on October 13!

Oh, I did get my first Oly distance podium finish over the weekend (as I see a couple of you have spotted in my RR). My time was way off what I hoped for, but the 3rd place AG finish was a good way to end the season.

Looking at logs (including mine), I can see that the tri "offseason" is underway. For anyone who wants to play, any race/training/time goals you'd like to share for 2009 (or late 2008), including you prospective Ironpersons? Here's what I'm looking forward to:

--Next Sunday: Santa Monica 10000 (big 5K/10K event I've never done before that sometimes attracts some world class runners; after setting a 10K PR in my Oly tri run in June, I need to see what my open 10K time looks like these days...haven't run one in a year)

--12/7: City of Angels 1/2 Marathon (hoping for 1:40 or less)

--2/16: LA Marathon (3rd time for me--also 3rd marathon; race has been sold and moved from 1st Sunday in March up to Monday, Presidents Day; shooting for 3:40 or less and get to be in the sub-4 starters corral for the first time. This is going to be my wife's first marathon.)

--3/28: Chesebro Half Marathon (BIG trail race I've never done; part of "Great Race of Agoura"--two separate half marathons, one trail, one road, plus a 10K, a 5K, and a kid's race--7000 runners in all)

--5/2: Wildflower Long Course (first time for this; I'll be doing the HIM on Saturday and my wife will do the Oly on Sunday)

Have to decide on a first tri or two sometime in March/April. Other major target for the year is my wife doing her first HIM in July (Vineman 70.3)--I'll be "jockstrapping" this year.

Sounds like a fun year with lots of running coming up Todd.

Personally, i've just started a winter maintanence program today, whcih will take me into Feb. Then onto my ironman plan. I also have the St. Louis marathon planned early in the '09 season, my first ever marathon. Praying that my knee cooperates with me next year. Have a half-iron planned in June and then IM Louisville in Aug. I also plan on throwing in 1 or 2 sprints for fun as well.

 Enjoy the "off" season all!

Good job today Todd! Way to make it interesting. Should I just set the tivo for the rest of the week? You're now my favorite contestant ever on Jeopardy.

Emm...well, you can always delete when you lose interest.

Ironically, we didn't get to see the show today: It was pre-empted here in LA due to live coverage of the two big wildfires going on today.

3 and out for me on Jeopardy...won $32,000, then $26,000, then finished 2nd when all of us missed Final Jeopardy, but I bet too much more than the woman in 2nd going in. Still got a $2000 payday for 2nd place, so just over $60,000 won in all.

New PR for me today--"Santa Monica 10000" 10K. First time sub-7:00/mile for that distance (barely): 43:19.6 (=6:59/mile). Race report is up...

Congrats Todd! Just got back from vacation in Hawaii and logged on to find out how awesome you did! wtg...wish I would've caught the show. I'm back swimming again thank goodness that wound finally closed up and I was able to swim in the warm ocean water and just get moving again. It felt wonderful...I miss running so much...will start slowly this week.
