Hey Guys,

Just curious what experiences everyone has had with the time predictions McMillan provides. I just checked it out and entered in my best half mary time. It actually predicts a faster full mary time than I expected so I'm curious if others have found it to be reliable. Oh and don't worry, I realize that actual race times are dependent on a million factors (distance specific training, overall health, weather, ability to control pace, etc.)...just curious if others to find it a good predictor or totally unrealistic?

Oh and if you haven't taken a look at it I'd encourage you do so (www.mcmillanrunning.com). Not that I'll change my training much based on the numbers it provided but it does help me with some pacing questions that I've been pondering.

All the best and happy Thursday everyone!

If you train well for the distance, it's pretty accurate. I actually beat it with my current marathon time. Good predictor on a relatively flat course, with good weather, and a well trained athlete.

I used the Mcmilliam calc to set my training paces based on a 5K in November for a 1/2 mary last sunday. It predicted i would run a 1:48. I finished @ 1:43.

I must say, during the training, I had thoughts that I wouldn't hit 1:48. I was totally floored when I went 1:43. Granted conditions were perfect and the course was great.

I have found it useful for determining some of my speed work as well as long run paces

I ran a 5K in December in 20:15.  It predicted a half mary time of 1:33 based on that result.  I didn't think that was possible.  Trained pretty well for my first half mary a few weeks ago and came in at 1:33:01.  I'm sure it isn't always spot on like that, but it's probably pretty close most of the time and can be fun tool to play around with to see what's possible.

That's a great story and some great running. Man, I'd love to be that fast! Anyway, I'll post a follow up after my upcoming marathon but it looks like my goal of 3:45 is very doable. Now we'll see what the weather gods have to say about it ;-)

Thanks everyone!

I've found the race time equivalencies to turn out fairly close, if you take into account varying training levels, race specific preparation, environmental conditions, etc. I consider the training pace ranges as a rough starting guideline but, depending on how I'm feeling, I've also found myself above or below those ranges at what seemed to be the right perceived effort for the workout.
