I think I screwed my self last week when I drove out to PA to ride the bike section of my 1st upcoming TRI. The TRI (Black Bear) is an extended sprint 750m swim x 18 mile bike x 3.4 mile run. Everything I read about the bike section from others that completed it last year was true (very difficult). I problem is that the bike course is all hills with not much flat sections at all. I loss my legs twice during the 18 mile loop. I fell once and had to dismount once.

Failure doesn’t suit me well. I am having a hard time trying to convince myself that I can complete the course without having to dismount, which would fall short of my goal. I keep thinking that I might have the same problems on the same two hills during the TRI. I am doubting myself before I even try. I don’t know if it was a smart thing to go out and try the course before the race or if I should go back and try again. I don’t want to have a mental bock.

I do have to mention that I did not have fresh legs due to the 25 mile ride (less then 15hrs ago) the day before. I am hoping that this is the case. Is it a wise to go back and try with fresh legs or just wait till the race?

What kind of gearing do you have on your bike? Consider getting a different cassette which makes climbing the hills easier. New cassette if you get 105 may be $55-65.

You might consider a 12-27 as an option. I have 4 different cassettes that I use for different courses. My goal is to make the course feel flat (I know not really possible) so I can use easier gear to make my effort be more consistent.

I'd get a new cassette then go out and ride the course so you feel confident about your ability to get up the hills. I was there with you...my first really hilly tri I had to walk up 4 hills..hated it. Next year I made it up and the third year I had taken almost 30' off my bike time..went from 13 mph to 18mph.

Yea! What Kathy said!

Get a granny gear and downshift to get up those hills!

Sounds like riding the course is exactly what you needed! I thought I was training on hills out here until I rode the IMKS bike course and found out that I was wayyyy under-prepared. Now I avoid flat routes like the plague. I had a mostly flat ride the other day after a 3-week hiatus and had a very fast pace [compared to my usual pace]. Use that experience to motivate you to get out there and train hard and hit the hills. It's the only way you'll get better at them!

Don't discount the effect of not having fresh legs.  At my first Oly last year (Mosseman in NH), I went out to ride the course the day after flying across the country, and the course seemed brutal.  Two days later, after some R&R, and with the excitement of the race, I loved the course and had an absolute blast.

However, if you are slowing to the point of dismounting, I agree with the others and would consider changing cassettes to give you another gear to get you over that hill.

I agree that riding the course is exactly the right move. I've ridden the Black Bear course at least a dozen times in the last couple of years and it gets easier each time (never easy...but easier none the less). I think being mentally prepared for what lies ahead is huge. If you get a chance to ride it again...do it!! I can almost guarantee it'll be easier the second time.

I'll be out there at 9am this Sunday with a pretty large group of people...you're officially invited!

Oh yeah...having a granny gear to go to wouldn't hurt either
