Overall Rank = 38/400
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 12/44
Pre-race routine:

Nothing unusual. I got up at 4:00 and took my time getting ready. A little coffee to get going, and had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Event warmup:

I drank gatorade while getting ready at transition, and had a gu pack right before I took off to swim. I swam 100 yards in the pool to loosen up, and I can't decide if that helped or not.
Swim
  • 05m 34s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

Thought I could do much better than 5:34 for 300 yards. I gave my time at 4:51 so I was 40 seconds slower than anticipated. Overall not too bad. I didn't start out too fast like I usually do which was good.
What would you do differently?:

Start off a little faster or finish stronger.
Transition 1
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

I don't think I could have cut any more time off.
Bike
  • 35m 55s
  • 12 miles
  • 20.05 mile/hr
Comments:

Pretty good AVS (20.5). I think if I lost about 15lbs I would be up to 22 AVS. I kept a pretty consistent cadence and pushed it pretty good.
What would you do differently?:

Not much... I think weight was the biggest factor.
Transition 2
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

Legs were pretty tight, but not too the point where they cramped.
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have shaved a couple seconds if I just dropped my helmet instead of think about it too much.
Run
  • 23m 21s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt really good on the run. Kept it at 7:30/mile which was much faster than I thought it was. I don't think I could have pushed it any harder without blowing it up.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around and drank vitamin water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Probably the swim. Otherwise, I think my 195 lbs can't compete with those in the top 5 of my age group. If I want to break into the top five I probably need to get down to 180ish.

Event comments:

Overall, it was a good race. I will sign up to do this one again. It's a great course to see how fast you really are. I am disapointed that I didn't break the top 10 though, but the guys who did finished in less than an hour. ARE YOU KIDDING ME. LESS THAN AN HOUR? I was shooting for less than 1:05 overall and missed that by 2 minutes. The guys in the top 5 in the St. Patty's day tri were less than 1:05 so I figured I could get up there if I made that. The thing i have to think about again is that I would have placed 2nd if I went Clydesdale. I could have easily put on 5lbs in the last week to meet the cutoff. Of course, I feel a little guilty doing that and not just trying to compete in my AG. More to ponder I guess.

One thing that was weird about the placement on this race. I was in the top 10% overall but only top 27% in my AG. I guess that shows how competitive the 35-39 AG is.

Great Race!  They guy that won it is in my local tri club, and a friend of mine, and he is speedy.  You did great out there!  You are speedy too!  I think us BTers need to do a better job of meeting at these things!

Thanks... I agree. We need to work on meeting together for these local tris. No disrespect to your friend who won. I am just a little bummed I wasn't up there myself.

great job today .. I was amazed that the top clyde for under 40 was right at an hour.. Just eat lots of ice cream, that seems to keep my weight waaaaay into the clydes area.  you bike and run were very good and remember it was a 300 meter swim not yards so your expected time most likely wasn't that far off
