I'm also in the Madison/HSV area (well, for one week more until I move to TX). Also lived in Birmingham for a while. There are a number of tris in the area run by Team Magic ( http://www.team-magic.com/), which I highly, highly recommend. In Northern Alabama, good ones include the Frantic Frog in Scottsboro (Sept), Rocket Man in HSV (August), and Wet Dog in Decatur (July). There is a very beginner friendly race in August in Sept called the Hiwaay Sprint that also has a two month long clinic that goes along with it that people can do for free. I'm sure that you'll love AL, especially the northern part.

It's very beginner friendly.  It's a backwards tri, the run is first and its a wave start.  It's 3 mile run, 6 bike, and a 400 meter swim.  The swim can be a little tricky because its in a pool.  I'll be there, I'm using it as a tune up race for IMKY.

Yep - the Hiwaay sprint is designed for beginners. The run is kinda hard (for me, but I suck at running) as it is on a cross-country course and has quite a few hills. Nothing too bad, but be prepared to have a slower time than you would have expected. The bike is easy - completely flat, well marked. It can get a little crowded, though. The swim is in a pool - nice wide lanes, but be prepared for lots of people in there with you, and having to weave your way between folks. But overall, it is very friendly towards beginners.

Oh, and I don't know if they are still doing it but they used to have a beginners clinic over like a 1-2mo period before the race, where you run and bike the course and receive lots of tips about it all. It seems to really make people more comfortable going into it. Best of luck, and I would love to hear how it goes!!
