Overall Rank = /350
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 3/10
Pre-race routine:

Magic oatmeal + immodium. Got there early and set-up in a leisurely fashion. Dipped feet in lake and got advice from Daniel about whether to wear my wetsuit.
Event warmup:

See above about the foot-dipping. Also sprinted up to transition to deposit my Garmin because I wore it to the start area.
Swim
  • 12m 47s
  • 656 yards
  • 01m 57s / 100 yards
Comments:

I seeded badly at the start so it was hard to get moving. As a result I was just chopping with my forearms, which wasted all kinds of energy and didn't move me very fast. After the first intermediate buoy, I was able to find a clear place, give myself the "glide, you idiot" peptalk and swim better.
What would you do differently?:

Seed myself at the front of the swim. I know better but the water was cold (I was shaking violently) so I didn't want to wade all of the way in until the last minute. Also, not let the nerves mess me up.
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

Holy cow, I suck at transition. I honestly thought this time was faster.
What would you do differently?:

Practice the transition. Will get some lock-laces as Heather suggested and see if I can ride sockless on the bike. Also, mount and Gu flask on the bike. DUH.
Bike
  • 37m 36s
  • 11.2 miles
  • 17.87 mile/hr
Comments:

This course was harder than I thought it would be, especially given the short distance. My heartrate felt high coming into transition and running back out. Dropped my Gu flask just after the mount line AGAIN. Tried to keep my cadence high and my gears low. Did well on the downhills and passed lots of people that way. Only two women passed me but they were both 37! I tried but couldn't catch them.
What would you do differently?:

Get better at the bike. Keep my gears lower and cadence higher. Not drop my Gu.
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

The transition area was tight and I was at the run/swim entrance so it was a long run with the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Lock laces to shorten shoe application time. Learn to put shoes on while riding - this is hard because my bike is so short.
Run
  • 22m 39s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Whew, this was hard. I was redlining the whole time and after drinking too much on the bike, was sloshing too.
What would you do differently?:

Drink less on the bike, concentrate on picking off other runners and not just the ones in my age group because I think I could have gone a little faster. Learn to use the multisport function on my Garmin so I could know how fast I was going.
Post race
Warm down:

Cheering for the other racers, hanging out with the NAMC crowd.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor seeding on swim, slow transitions, lack of bike fitness. The run saved me.

Event comments:

The lake was beautiful, the volunteers were awesome and everything ran smoothly. Would definitely do this race again.
