Overall Rank = 174/400
Age Group = 40+ clydes
Age Group Rank = 5/16
Pre-race routine:

packed everything the night before so all I had to do was wake up, let the dogs out for a few minutes and while they are outside eat.. unfortunately I had no food in my fridge, was out of bagel's and peanut butter. So I let the dogs in and stopped for a sausage mcmuffin but didn't have any caffeine.
Event warmup:

Got set up, Saw Jonny [jbrasher] and made some overly obvious comments about people, saw steve and marcy real quick. Got a call from bonny who wanted to double check directions and I was worried I got them lost so was glad we I saw that she made it.
Jumped in the pool and after the first 50 I could tell that my tri shirt is way to loose even though I had put safty pins in the huge back mesh pocket I could feel it dragging me so I turned it into a modified one piece as best I could then did another 150. Thought maybe I shouldn't do the total swim distance as a warm up and stopped there.
Swim
  • 05m 29s
  • 300 meters
  • 01m 50s / 100 meters
Comments:

I had put down 5 min and was worried that I'd embarrass myself. After the first 50 I had nearly caught the lady in front of me. the 2nd 50 I actually did great on drafting[it's so much easier on pool swims] but after the 2nd 50 I decided to pass her at the wall. I was worried that if I caught up to her that quickly she would slow down if I drafted the whole way. Things went very well until the end. the 2nd to last lap I could see Karen by the side of the pool so I would attempt to yell her name.. karen, breath, karen, breath, but after a few times I was getting out of breath, at the last wall I could see someone was gaining on me so I let him pass me at the wall and did a great job drafting all the way to the ladder.. which made me glad that I passed that lady earily
What would you do differently?:

really nothing,,
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

my HR for transition is 150?? that was higher than the swim.. I didn't think I really ran hard to the bike and I wanted to take an extra 45-60 extra to let my HR come down since I was thinking of doing a LT test on the bike part. Once I got to the line I didnt' do a great job of getting up on the bike, and I didn't get enough speed up before getting in my shoes..not bad but I've done much better
What would you do differently?:

work on getting on the bike from the right side i usually do it from the left and that actually threw me a bit
Bike
  • 39m 10s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.38 mile/hr
Comments:

I know I was responsible for a few penalty's on people's 1stloop.. I was on my 2nd loop and on the back side of the loop I came up to a cluster of people just riding on the left, middle and right so I was weaving through all of them and heard a bike behind me and notice the officials looking/writing at the people just passed.. Bonnie caught up to me close to the end and said dont let a girl beat you or something like that so I was able to push a bit more and pass her before finishing..
This was actually a great bike leg for me, I took it easy in the beginning and then went hard.. I was amazed that i wasn't passed like I usually get on the bike and I passed way more people,, I think with the time trail start all those people were already ahead of me
What would you do differently?:

try to push harder that last lap,,
Transition 2
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

great flying dismount for me, easy jog right to the rack just had issue's getting my left shoe on so I had to untie it and put it on the way normal people do. my feet were really cold and a bit numb when I started running out of T2
What would you do differently?:

get warmer feet
Run
  • 29m 2s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

I didn't' have that rubbery feeling in my legs just cold numb feet, which is odd since I've done all of one brick this year,, the other odd thing is all my runs have been in Z1 at around 12 min mile pace. there were no mile markers and I didn't really look at my HR for the run.. I just concentrated on good form, and a higher cadence than I usually do and all of a sudden the run was just about over.. I thought we ended down the sidewalk but we looped around a grass trail that through me off since I couldn't figure out where we would turn around at so I didn't' pick up the pace enough at the end..
My HR for the run was a 144 avg which is strange since that's just a Z2 run for me,, I should have really pushed harder, but it was a odd run in that i wasn't out of breath, my legs weren't' that tired, they just didn't' want to move faster so I guess I need speed work so they understand what a faster pace is
What would you do differently?:

Run more, get faster feet
Post race
Warm down:

joked around with karen and jonny, Saw Jen who came out to cheer a family member. talked with Bonny, Steve and Marcy a bit, had a couple of pancakes. I got to see the lady finish whose family had put up quite a few motivation picture for her on the bike course,, which is quite cool

What limited your ability to perform faster:

weighing 230 lbs, not allowing to ride a motorcycle on the bike part

Event comments:

This was a great race and I really liked the bike course.. just having pancakes at the end is enough for me.. while I joke about being jaded I think it's so cool that this family had pictures of the young daughter cheering on her mom all over the bike course..Considering the only people I see at a race are BT people since my friends are either sleeping, drinking or at church on the weekend I'll never have someone out there cheering me on. So while I joked about it a bit it's more that I'm envious. Plus You never know what is going on in people's lives and while to me this was just a fun morning workout to others it is so much more. I just need to remember that sometimes.

just went pretty easy for the first 12 min then hit the lap button to see my HR the last part of the race and pushed a bit harder. My HR avg was 148 and my LT test last year on the bike was 156 so it's actually pretty close since this most likely is not the best way of doing the test

You did great on the bike leg and you had fun while racing. Good job.

Considering the only people I see at a race are BT people since my friends.....

Are you saying that BT people aren't your friends? It sounds like you had plenty of friends cheering you on. We should all be so lucky.

Yeah - I thought I was slick with my "don't let a girl pass you comment...(didn't I say don't let a slow swimmer pass you?  I can't remember)...and then you just zipped right by me two seconds later...so I wasn't slick anymore.  Great race Gary, and it was great to meet you in person!

excellent race, very impressive run with a low HR. Yes, maybe you should try the motorcylce next time, I think that would improve your "bike" pace.

Great race all around, Gary.  You swim, bike, and run splits are all very good, especially the swim!

Mmmmm... pancakes!  Sorry, I missed that!   I would have been out there to cheer you guys on and steal some pancakes, but I went to Muenster early!

Great race!  I always forget how well you swim, and then you show me with swim splits like this.  An excellent bike split as well!
