Overall Rank = 49/326
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 11/47
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30am. Ate a bowl of oatmeal and a banana. Had some coffee on the way down. Metallica, Rage and a few other high octane songs to get the juices flowing.

Realized that I forgot my race belt (Thanks W!). Got body marked and checked in. Aside from the "hey, where do I put my mountain bike and 20 lbs worth of crap", absolutly no issues in setup.

Talked to my NAMC peeps, American Bad Ass and a few other chums.
Event warmup:

Doned wetsuit and did a few 100s. Wetsuit felt great. Peed and I was good to go.
Swim
  • 10m 37s
  • 656 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt great the entire swim. Never felt as though I was killing it but I knew I was swimming hard. Everything worked as it should (sighting, breating, wetsuit, etc.) Started with the chaos and it was not bad (I'm pretty good at holding my own in the water). Drafted off some feet for 400 of the 650 yards. I was 9:35 out of the water with a 1:00 run to T1. That's a 1:27/100 pace. KICK ASS! I think Susan kicking my ass the pool is kinda working.

5th out of the water in AG and 25th out of the water overall.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

HR very high coming out of water. Wetsuit coming off was as expected. No issues with top but a little slow getting the ankles off. Everything was great coming immediatly out of T1.

14th fastest t1 overall and 4th in AG.

Swim plus T1 put me at 21 overall and 2nd in my AG.
Bike
  • 32m 49s
  • 11.2 miles
  • 20.48 mile/hr
Comments:

Coming out of T1, my HR was sky high. Garmin said Zone 6. Took 2 miles to settle in. Also, could not get feet into shoes. Normally, I have no issues. Maybe I need to bodyglide the inside of my shoes.

Otherwise, for the most part, I laid down the hammer. Brett caught me at mile 9 which made me refocus and put a little more effort in. He passed me then I passed him and left t2 first.

I was so busy passing Brett that I almost forgot to take my feet out of my shoes and how to dismount. Running dismount worked great (once I remembered what I was doing).

63th fastest bike overall and 14th in AG.

Cumulative time after bike put me at 38th overall and 8th in my AG.
Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Only issue was that I have to rack my bike on the back of the seat which means I have to turn it around. I think in T2, I'll start racking it on the handlebars. Otherwise, everything went as planned.

94th fastest t2 overall and 18th in AG.

Cumulative time after t2 put me at 36th overall and 8th in my AG.
Run
  • 23m 36s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

Brett caught me at 1/4 mile out of t1. I'm not where he is with running so I let him go but tried to move as fast as I could.

Took a small bit of water at the first aid station. Mile 2 felt ALL uphill and was my slowest mile.

96th fastest run overall and 21st in AG.

Cumulative time after run put me at 49th overall and 11th in my AG.

Saw Kirk ahead and tried to catch him in the last 1.5 miles but he was out of reach.

Finally, PR on my 5K time. Booyah!
What would you do differently?:

Looking at my cummulative placings, last year my best events were swimming, running and biking. Just based on these results, my best events are swimming, biking and running. I know Brett knows that my running needs work and we talked about that this weekend.
Post race
Warm down:

Cheering other folks on. This is always the best part of the race.

Event comments:

Tri The Parks does an awesome job and Tanner did not dissapoint. Great season opener race.

I knew you were getting faster on the swim, but my GOSH I didn't realize you had gotten that fast. Maybe there is something to this swim practice thing I keep hearing about. AWESOME race, you are going to kick butt at GC!

Great race brother!  I think I need to just stay one day behind you on your training and not skimp on anything.  You rocked it out there!  If I have done the math right, I won't ever have to be in your AG.  Thank goodness.

Yes, your math is correct (7 years diff).

Kraig and Greg are going to follow that same training plan (J22 + 1 day).  I think it'll work well until I do a 100+ miler on Sunday and your f'ed for working on Monday.  LOL

Now I know who's feet I need to be on at the rest of the races.  I didnt' realize we were right by each other coming out of the water.

Great job on the race.  I find it good to keep tabs on others around you because it's great motivation and doesn't let you slack off.  And you never did.

Congrats on the PR and Brett will keep you on that track.  More blazing times ahead!
