How was it?

I'd love to have a regular ows time with everyone in an area close to me. I have swims on my training plan most Saturdays this month along with a bike and run.

Hey All!

em73 and I got discounts for THIS Sunday's race in Hopkinton.  We aren't really in race shape, but are considering it as a "tune-up" anyone else having thoughts?

Marianne (Mav) and I swam on Sat morning.  It was my first OWS, so I may not be a good judge.  If I were to guess, the water was probably 55-57.  It was fine in the suit, but as soon as my face hit the water, it took my breath away.  We swam around for about 20 mins.  Then we did the bike route in the rain.   If I did all that on Sat, then any weather will be better for Sunday.

I did 2/3 of the race on Sat in crappy weather, not having ever done a race before, or OWS, and only the 3rd time on my bike.  You guys should do it.

I just came back from Hopkinton again...and it was MUCH better. The water was just as cold, but the air temp was so much warmer that I didnt freeze on the bike. My feet were not numb like Sat . I also just wore my tri suit with a bike jacket and was fine. Thanks for coming out on Sat Josh. You did great for a first OWS in frezzing temps. You will be FINE this weekend. For only a second time on a bike you actually ROCKED. It should be great on Sunday with warmer temps predicted all week. Looking forward to the season opener

Thanks for the update mav. I am racing hopkinton on sunday and looking at the 7 day forecast, totally stressing about the water temp - i keep telling myself, you'll only be in the water start to finish 12 - 15 minutes it'll be okay, but then am not sure what to wear on the bike, jacket over my trisuit i guess.

I'm going to try and do a bunch of OWS at Lake Pearl over the summer. The beach there is 3.5 miles from my house and folks are welcome to park there and run to the lake if they want. Even better, the Wrentham Outlets are just over two miles from the beach and anyone could easily park there and run round trip to the beach. I still have to figure out whether they charge for parking at Lake Pearl or if you can get to the beach for free if you're on a bike/running.

Someone in the Hock YMCA tri club also said that there were times last year when lifeguards kept watch in a boat on Lake Pearl during some group OWS. If that's true, and they continue to that, that would be way cool. I'm counting on the Hock Try-a-Tri being my first OWS swim race, and I hope to get some (preferably supervised) training swims there before the race on 7/13.

The YMCA used to run the beach at Lake Pearl and this year they are no longer doing it. I wonder if anyone will be doing it or if they hired someone else to do it.  I would be curious where you went in...going in by bike you can get lots of places but harder to carry my wetsuit. I live 8 minutes from the outlets and very close to Lake Pearl. If you are going let me know and I may join you if I can make it.

A great place to swim early season is the Cranberry Country Tri pond as it is shallow so warms up quickly. It is about 25 minute drive from North Attleboro.

Lake Massapog is the place in Sharon that is also good to swim in. A group meets there Friday mornings.

Pretty soon I need to do 1.5 hour ows..yah I know most of you won't be wanting to go that long but company is always nice even for part of it. I also hope to recruit some people to swim with me and bump into me and help me practice lots of ows contact.

For those who are racing in Hopkinton this weekend.... I just came back from doing an open water swim. The water temps were probably close to 60 degrees. I was able to stay in the water for close to 40 mins.Swam parallel to the shore X2 then across the lake and back. My feet were pretty cold toward the end but otherwise it was better than it has been. It was also a little choppy. Didnt have to bilateral breathe but it would help if you could. I swam in a wetsuit. Good luck on Sunday!

Yes. The air was alot warmer too which I think helped. I didn't feel at all numb. My feet were really cold when we went. I also didn't have as much problem with breathing as when we went. I " warmed up"for about 15 mins before heading across the lake. I was able to breathe every stroke X2-3 strokes then evry 4th stroke I would breathe. My son was with me on his surf board so I had no anxiety about being in deep water and becoming too cold or cramping. I could have stayed in the water longer but I was fatigued. Josh I think you will find it alot better. The bike was a pleasure today, warm temps NO rain! I think you will find Sun much more fun!

So, I think I am doing the race Sunday.  I tried to register online, but it wasn't available anymore. I spoke to the guy running it and he said there is plenty of room left.  I might wus out, as this is my first race of the year and I'm not really ready.  BUT, if I do show, em73 will come with our big black dog and I'll have a black/blue lemond bike.
