Pre-race routine:

This was pretty much a last minute decision to enter this race (I signed up last Tuesday). Other than swimming, I really haven't been training seriously since I hurt my back las Sept. I also bought a new bike (one of those Javelin deals) and haven't been too comfortable on it.

To be completely honest, with the weather forcast (low 50's, windy & rainy), I wasn't too excited about this race.

My goal was to get into a race and see how it goes. I wanted to finish in under 1:25 (1:30 swim pace, 19mph bike, & 9 min/mi run), but really didn't have any expectations. In light of this, I decided to leave the HR strap off and just go by feel.
Event warmup:

Jumped in the pool and swam a few easy laps.
Swim
  • 04m 30s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 30s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was seeded right behind davidb. After chatting with Ester (swim send off & RD's wife), I jumped in and got a good push off the wall. This was a very uneventful swim. For most of this swim, I was about half a length behind David and equally in front of the person behind me. Coming to the last wall, I could see I was catching up a bit, so I eased off a little and climbed out at the ladder.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, this a very smooth pool swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

Decided not to wear the jacket and had some problems getting my shoes on.
Bike
  • 51m 16s
  • 15.3 miles
  • 17.91 mile/hr
Comments:

I was very apprehensive for this ride. I was a bit nervous with the wet roads. I was also wearing sunglasses and couldn't see as well as I would have liked. I think it would have helped if I had ridden the course prior to the race. The first half was mostly old country roads with quite a few turns and I really never felt comfortable riding them. I also slowed way down at the turns to be a bit more cautious than I probably needed to be.

I spent way too much time out of the aerobars in the first half and my effort wasn't too high. During the second half, I felt much more comfortable, but unfortunately, I was still getting passed quite a bit.

On the other hand, I felt real comfortable on the new bike and think I have it pretty close to dialed in for me.
What would you do differently?:

Pre-ride the course and wear the glasses with the yellow or clear lenses. The fact that I rode only 150 miles over the past 2 months probably contributed to these results ;)

I'm pretty sure if I had my HRM, it would have reflected a low(ish) effort and I could have pushed a bit more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

Came in nicely and hear jcagg90 yelling at me. I'm chatting with him while trying to get ready for the run. My feet were a little numb and I didn't put my stretchie laces on my shoes. So, I struggled a bit to get my numb feet into my tied shoes, but I managed okay.
Run
  • 25m 20s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

I started off about as easy as possible. Glancing at the Garmin, I was pushing it a bit more than I wanted. I was really cautious and was focusing on how my back was feeling. I maintained a comfortable pace through the second mile. By the 3'rd mile, I was feeling great and pushed a bit more. I still felt great and was able to finish strong.

My goal was to go under 9:00 min pace, so I'm real happy with the 8:10 overall pace, but I think the course was a little short (I had 3.03 on the Garmin, but did start it a tad late I think).
What would you do differently?:

Looking back now, I know I could have pushed harder for the first 2 miles. But, having only run 50 miles since last Sept, I'm really happy with this run.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some water and fruit and chatted with my parents and the other BTers at the race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of bike/run training this year.

I suppose I could have gone harder, but it's easy for me to say that now. I truly believe I could have gone harder on the run since it was the end. If I would have gone harder on the bike, it probably would have just slowed my run. I really don't have much bike fitness right now.

Course: Over the river and through the woods. Then through a few neighborhoods and back to the school. The beginning and end of this run was on typical N DFW 8' cement trails. With the weather, though, there were many puddles with some mud. This made for some slippin & slidin, but fortunately I was able to maintain balance. The last quirkiness of this course is the tunnel under the road was not too 6' friendly and I hunched through it.

So you were one of the fast kids in the pool!! Nice bike and run too with the minimal
training. Believe me, the yellow lenses would not have been any good. I had mine on,
and ended up wearing them on the tip of my nose to see over the top. Great job!!

Man, Chris!  With those times, I'd never guess you've recently recovered from a back injury!  Smokin' fast swim.  And a very solid effort on the run.

Congrats!
