I was wondering. The race requires a bike inspection by a specific bike shop. Is this usual for an olympic race? How much does it cost? How long does it take and what exactly are they inspecting? I am from out of town for this race and this inspection has the potential to be very inconvenient.

Pretty standard to have an inspection. Bike Doctor does it for this race, gratis. Either take it when you get your packet, on when you rack your bike. They (Bike Doctor) have people at the check-ins, but there may be a bit of a line. Their Annapolis and Arnold locations are close to where the race is, like within 5 or 10 miles, so whenever you get here, you can stop by and have it done.

I went to the Bike Doctor location in Annapolis on Saturday before I racked my bike down at the pier.  Although the store was croweded, it took me no more than 10 minutes to complete the whole process.  Great guys at Bike Doctor.  Don't forget to take your helmet in, too.

I guess I didn't read the rules all the way, "bike inspection?"

Just signed up last week, I'm really pumped about this race. I'm on my Tri journey, did a Sprint and now moving up.

Congrats!

All they do is check your brakes, make sure your cranks and stem are tight and spin the wheels.  No big deal.  Takes about 2 minutes.

Last year the run course was a moving target and even two days before it was not accurate as to what they had on race day.

I lived and trained there for years so once they do post it I can give a blow by blow of what to expect.

Thanks. I used to work right on the Harbor in Downtown Annapolis and I drove in from Delaware (therefore accross the Bay Bridge) everyday, so I think I have a good idea of the bike course. In one word HILLY!  Hope it won't be a rainy day. Doing the cobblestone roads around the capital won't be much fun if it is wet.  The idea of a "straight and fast, out and back" run sounds appealing.

The course maps for the Annapolis Tri were posted this week.  I took the bike map from TriColumbia's web site and mapped it on BT so I could see the elevation profile.  I've saved it here:  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/map.asp?routeid=60270.

Here are links to the maps on the TriColumbia site:  Swim, Bike, Run.

I was thinking of checking out the bike course this weekend.  Riding on Ritchie Highway is not my idea of fun, though.  The swim I've done tons of times, and based on my experience, looks to be against the current, so don't plan on a fast swim time.  The run looks decent, mostly in the park itself.  I'll have to check it out to see how shady it is.

Thanks for posting!  Do you guys think the run through the park is on a trail or a road surface?  I worked at Sandy Point when I was younger, but I don't really remember the layout of the park all that well.  I don't remember many roads (or trails that look like that!) running through it.  The run looks strange to me!

The part in the park has got to be trail.  There are no roads where that run course is.  I'm tempted to go down there this weekend to swim & bike, except for the fact that the jellyfish are out.

Wow, I can't believe they have the bike on 50 and Ritchie Hwy?  At least you'll get to pass the stopped motorist in traffic trying to go over or come back from OC!

Not on 50 - on the little access road that runs parallel to it on both sides.  You should still have lots of spectators though.

Yeah, the road parrellels Rt. 50 and that section will be flat and fast.  The part coming down from St. Margarets will be mostly downhill, then you have the hiccup of the bridge and towards downtown.

What I don't get is this ....... you will turn LEFT off of the road near the bridge to cross it ..... then go over the bridge, through the portion downtown and then turn right to get back across the bridge .... WHERE YOU WILL HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE PEOPLE TURNING LEFT ........ not liking that idea as you will be coming off of the bridge pretty fast.  Hmmmmmmm.

Look at the map on the web site.  I think it says something about going against traffic and a no-passing zone, so what I suspect is that you'll be on the left shoulder each way over the bridge into and out of downtown, eliminating the need to intersect at the bridge.  The bridge is probably also a no-passing zone.  I can't imagine Vig would have designed a bike course where the paths cross.

This is correct... left on the bridge against traffic (and against other riders) headding into downtown... cross over the bridge with traffic (same side you crossed on before) heading out of town on the way back and then straight up RT 2 to College Parkway.

That ride up RT 2 is NET uphill but rolling throughout.  College Parkway is primarily flat so that will be a nice push into the run.  It looks like a good even course.  A little bit for everyone :-

You can call that rolling if you want to but in FL we call that a hill especially coming up from the Naval Academy towards 50.

According to this, http://www.hometownannapolis.com/cgi-bin/read/2008/08_04-17/CAN,the bike route needs to be changed again. Apparently the powers that be in our fair county are throwing up as many permit issues as they can to make this as difficult as possible to pull off. Unbelievable. How can a few business owners and church leaders hold literally thousands of participants hostage like this?

What a pian in the azz ........ last year it went off well enough, and traffic was not that big of a deal.  And it was totally downtown for most of the event other than the bike route.

I was a little bit surprised that my parent's church wasn't raising the big fuss since St. Margaret's has only one real road to access it and the bike course would be zipping by on that.  I'm sure they were vocal about it.

100% against the race for businesses???  Give me a frickin' break!  About half of those businesses would be making money based on the race!  And the overall volume of people would not be too far off of what they get during the Academy graduation in June.

If they end up shortening the course or cancelling the race I'm gonna be pizzed .......

You're not the only one. I live here, I pay taxes. I own a business in the County that employs county residents, and I pay taxes on that too. Nobody asked me for my opinion.
A few vocal people with the ear of the powers that be are going to taint this for all the rest of us. The article said businesses were 100% opposed? How many businesses are really affected by this course this time of day? Not many. The County stands to get more from hotel taxes and the like than will be lost, not to mention the positive image of Annapolis it promotes.
Apparently we 2,000 doing the race are less entitled to use the roads than those going about their dialy affairs are.
I smell a problem brewing...
And I promise, sitting in traffic more than a few times for Academy graduation and footballs games, this would cause much less of a disruption than that would.
