Alright folks.  This is my next one.  Who else will be running in the QC Tri?

I will be, I was lucky to sign up when I did. It is now sold out. I was hoping that the girl I've been seeing recently would like to do this one, but we didn't get her signed up in time.

Doh.  Oh well.

I hope it will be as nice as it was last year, just not as hot.  It was a scorcher last year.

So this is your first time doing this race?  It's a good one.  Have you done any OWS races yet?

Nope, this will be my first OWS. From what I've read it's a weird way to race though. OWS with a time trial start instead of a wave start. I've heard that's a big change from the past and have wondered why they changed it to that.

Not certain why they changed it.  In reality, it went off without a hitch last year.  Kind of nice to have everyone spread out on the course too instead of in bunches.  So that was kind of nice.  I think, on the longer swim races (up to the 750-800 length) the spread out happens in the water, but at 600m it isn't enough time?  Hell, I don't know.

What I do know is that it is very well run.  Oh, and you might get your name announced when you cross the finish line if there aren't too many people around you.  I did last year.  Talk about a cool feeling.

If you have the chance, go out and practice the course, but more importantly, practice your mounting out of the parking lot.  There is the slightest uphill right out of T1 and it got a lot of people last year, including me.

Hey Sprint_DA,

You know of anyone that can go out and start checking the water temp?  Would love to know what to expect.  Last year it was nice and warm.  Doubt it will be that way this year.

I can probably start checking it on occasion. I'm also not figuring that it's going to be too warm at this point. I'll try to keep it updated here.

In an email from the RD:
? Water Temp is expected to be about 70 degrees, about 6 degrees cooler than last year. Wetsuits will be allowed per USAT rules. As soon as I get a Temp reading from West Lake, I will post it on our message Board.

Yeah, I saw that from Eric.  Also went onto their message boards and a guy said he was in there this past weekend and it was only 65.  Now, if memory serves me right, last year it heated up a lot the last week.  Helps that it is a shallow lake.  But I don't think the air temps have been anywhere close to what they were last year at this time.

I'm hoping it does stay cool.  Want to see how I do in this swim with a suit on.

What temp does the wetsuit become less important? I'd have to rent one, and I guess if I'm going to do that I'd better do it soon. It's supposed to be in the 80's with some rain here all week this week, maybe get to 90 once. I don't know if that's going to be enough to really get the temps up.

In reality, if the temp is above 65 you can do it.  It will be cold, and I mean REALLY cold, but you can do it.  My personal cut off is about 70.  And then, of course, there are the USAT rules.  I don't know if they can get it to you in time, but I rented mine, last year, from Eagle River Outfitters in Galena.  I then just bought it outright.  Check them out.

By the way.  Rain will negate any temperature gains.  Found this out at Accenture last year.  They had some wicked rains a few days before the race.  Dropped the water temp by almost 8 degrees for race day.  Somewhere around 60 at race time.  THAT was some cold water.

Thanks for the advice. I've looked at renting a wetsuit, and also just buying one. There's a shop in Cedar Rapids, about an hour and a half from here (I'm there for work all the time), that stocks and sells tri wetsuits. I've thought about just picking one up instead of even worrying about trying to get one rented through the internet, especially since I'm probably not the easiest person to fit at 6'4" 197.
Is it odd that we're the only two people really talking in this thread?

It is strange that not more people are going to be at it, yes.  Then again, the Hy-Vee race is the next day which is probably a bigger draw.  Even though one is an Oly and the other is a Sprint.

Alright, lets get this race going! Picked up my wetsuit from the folks in Galena today. Going to take some practice in it this weekend. I'm ready for this race.

Update: While I don't know the exact water temperature, all I am prepared to say is that water is warm. Like "I'm mad at myself for renting a wetsuit before I checked the water out for myself." warm.

Yeah, but it might be worth paying the extra money to keep it.  The water temp is probably close to 70.  So now it might be a matter of comfort versus speed because you will be faster in it.  Just depends on how quickly you can take it off in T1.

Saw on their message boards that the water temp was about 70 yesterday and it is going to be a warm week.  Guess we won't need those suits after all.

Yeah, oh well. I guess I'll probably not buy it after I "use it." Oh well, it was a good thought when the temps were in the 60's. And with my luck if I hadn't rented the temp would have dropped and I'd be out trying to find one to buy this week. Anyway, you feeling ready for the race? I thought I saw something somewhere, TAN maybe, about some blisters. You going to be all healed up and ready to go Saturday?

The raw spots that were blisters on my achillies tendons are ugly.  Frankly.  Did a run last night (check my logs) and had them covered with a band aid AND mole skin.  The things started to fall off by the end.  SO, I will have to cover them up with Duct Tape on Saturday morning.  Keep your eyes peeled for a guy with duct tape on his heels.  That will probably be me.

We are probably going to hit the packet pickup early, like right at 4ish.  Otherwise, we should try to get together on Saturday morning before the race.

For Crowny and anyone else reading this thread but not posting in it:
Went to OWS practice at West Lake last night. The water temp is fine, above 70, I would say. A lot of people were wearing wetsuits, but I didn't find mine necessary or particularly helpful. Good luck to everyone, and see you all at packet pickup or on race morning.
