Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 5:30, stretched, got dressed, ate a banana and started taking in some electrolytes. Drove to the race and got dropped off at the buses. Once at the race site, picked up my chip, went to the bathroom and stretched a bit more.
Event warmup:

Jogged around a little bit after the buses dropped us off at the start line. Stretched.

Comments:

The run started out downhill, which is huge weakness of mine. Had to tell myself to stay in control and that the field would shift and settle out. Stayed toward the left of the field, I feel as though its easier to pass/be passed here. Mile 1 and 2 rolled by before I had really gotten into race mode or any kind of pace.

Was glad to see the first water stop, not because I was thirsty but because it reminded me that I was in a race. There weren't many spectators because of the course location so it was nice to see the volunteers at the water stops.

Thought mile 3-4 was the longest mile I had run in awhile, that was because I missed the "4" marker and was almost through with mile 5. When I saw the half way point my body decided that it wanted to pick up speed, my mind decided that that wasn't a good idea and that I could probably handle picking up the pace the last 2 miles but not 5.

Settled back into my pace and just keep pushing the up hill and trying to control my rhythm downhill. Around mile 7 I realized that I had forgotten to take my GU that I had now been carrying for most of the race. Figured it was better to take it now then not take it at all. Ate half of it, washed it down with water and threw the rest away.

Was very happy to see the end to mile 8. This is where I decided to pick up the pace, figured it was now or never. We entered the Old Towne Alexandria and it was nice to see all the people cheering the runners along.

Mile 9 to the finish was mentally challenging. My lungs were burning but I wanted to keep picking up the pace, so I let my legs start kicking back into the sprint. No matter how much the last mile hurts, its still, the last mile so I try to push myself as hard as I can.

Was very happy when I crossed the finish line and knew I got to stop running.

What would you do differently?:

I would have arrived maybe 10-15 mins earlier to get in some more stretching time. Also would have positioned myself a little further up in the start since it was an open field.

Also wish I had worn a long sleeve race shirt and different socks.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked through the chute, went and found Dan. Then we went to Starbucks. Stretched when I got home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I should have stretched out my hip flexors and IT bands more before the race.

Event comments:

Nice challenging course but probably wouldn't do this race again.

Performance: Good
Resting HR before the race was 81, which was a little high, probably because I was nervous. Watched my HR jump to 96 right after the gun went off, then to 106 when the field really started to move. HR climbed almost immediately on the first hill and after trying to get it back down into 160 range for 2 minutes, I figured 170s was where I was going to run and just went with it.
Course: Hills. Hills. Hills. If we weren't going up a hill we were going down one. There wasn't a section on the course where I felt like I was running on level ground.

Great race! Way to place in the top 25% of your AG.

You are so talented and I know you are going to have a great season. Your str is the swim and yet you still do this well in the run...

Awesome job.

Great race, and really good pace, especially given all the hills!  Way to push those last couple of miles.  I think you and Dan need to sign up for the VAMDDCBTTC throwdown at the Army 10-Miler in October.  Flat and fast.  Nice job.
