St. Anthony's Triathlon
85F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 10m 12s
Overall Rank = 2577/
Age Group = F 30-34
Age Group Rank = 96/155
Pre-race routine:

Eat 3 Cliff blocks and a Cliff peanut thingie...new for me, usually I have a bagel...
Event warmup:

Walk to the swim start from the transition area...a long walk...
Swim
  • 34m 53s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim seemed really long...it was just never ending - usually I enjoy the swim more than I did this time...I spotted really well though, which was an improvement over my last Olympic...there were more waves than last year, but I didn't really have trouble being in the water with the waves...so thats good..
What would you do differently?:

It seemed long - but I didn't do horribly (or so I thought)...
I did a LOT worse than last year - like 3+ minutes worse...so I think its really that I just need to practice more (last year, I swam alot, this year, I didn't)...so I guess, I'd practice more:)
Transition 1
  • 03m 9s
Comments:

UGH! I had these spiffy new St. Anthonyy's socks...and I swear, I couldn't get them on my feet without falling over...took forever...everything else was fine, just the socks...
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to get my socks on without falling over?
Bike
  • 1h 24m 1s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.75 mile/hr
Comments:

At mile 1, before I'd had anything to drink, my new water thing on my aerobars fell off in the middle of the road...so I spent a while freaking out cause I'd had nothing to drink at all since I woke up...but I managed to get a "handoff" water bottle at the half way point, had to slow down a lot to get it, and then absolutely chugged the thing...but that really helped me and my water situation...anyways, I was going really well at first, fast for me...there was wind, couldn't always figure out for sure when I was in a headwind and when I was in a tailwind...it was kinda weird...also, there were a lot of turns, and I always brake so much cause I am scared...I did feel myself getting tired, but wasn't "bad"...this was a PR for an Olympic for me, almost 2 minutes faster than last year, and a lot faster than H.O.T.
One thing that I did which was good - there was this fast 40y.o. who passed me at mile2...I kept her in my sights and passed her at mile22...kewl!
What would you do differently?:

Prepare more for longer biking, and learn how to turn...I felt stronger than ever on the bike, but I couldn't sustain it...if I train on this more, I really think I could sustain a lot better...
Transition 2
  • 02m 59s
Comments:

Was doing great, stopped to take a huge swig of water - warm...yuck! Then off I go, BUT, forgot to take off my bike helmet...had to run back to drop that off, get my visor...then get going again...stupid, if not for that - I would have been under 3:10...ARGH!!!
What would you do differently?:

Not forget to take off my bike helmet...stupid 12 seconds!
Run
  • 1h 05m 12s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

It was HOT! My wave started at 8:54 which means that I didn't get to the run until 11am...blistering HOT...BUT...I did it...I desperately wanted to run the whole thing...didn't think I would at first...the whole way out, I'd find people running a good pace, and keep up with them...I didn't walk at all for water or anything going out...and I didn't...got to mile 3, and my garmin said 9:59/mile...so at that point, I knew I could do under 11:00/mile (my goal time)...so I let myself walk only to drink...I ended up walking 4 water stations total...for about 10-15seconds each, and then I made myself start up again...I kept running otherwise, at mile5, I knew I could make it...only bad thing was that my garmin said I did 10:22/mile, so I was a bit bummed that the "official" time was 10:30/mile
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...I can't complain about this at all...this is 1:08/mile better than laqst year...almost 7 minutes better total...I'm THRILLED!!

Post race
Warm down:

Walk around, eat some grapes, look for people...try to see race results...give up...get bike, go home...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My athletic ability - and not getting as much biking under me as I should have - and not swimming anough...but I'll definitely be fixing this problem this summer:)

Event comments:

My favorite triathlon!

Simply awesome Tonya!  It WAS the ice cream!  I gotta tell ya, the improvements you've made this past year have been so great!!!  This year we will NOT let H.O.T. beat us!!  Sorry I didn't get to see you after the race, I was exhausted.  All I wanted to do was get home.

Glad you had a good race!!  You did awesome!  Matt had a good day out there as well I saw.  See you in August!!  AND in November!!!
