Subject: Saddle sores - help me heal!
I have a bleeding sore where the seam of my bike short meets the inner thigh. When I ride, it feels like it is pinching there and by the time I finish it is bleeding. With my shorter rides I usually just get a purple sore but by the end of my ride today (1hr 17 minutes) it was bleeding. I am using a generic chamois cream but have ordered some assois hoping that gets rid of it. I also ride with shorts that have no seams but they don't make a difference. What can I put on it to get it to heal quickly - this is only my first ride of the week! OUCH!!!!!

You could try Aquaphor

Wear really loose shorts without underwear around the house while it heals. You may have to take some time off until it gets better. Ditch those bike shorts.

Don't sleep in any underwear while its healing either.

An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure when it comes to saddle sores, but once the damage is done . . . . neosporine works for me.

Thank you all! I've got neosporin on it now - it happens regardless of saddle and shorts but it never has bled before. Guess I'll take some time off and wait for the assois cream to show up. Maybe I need to tweak my saddle a bit to one side to get the pressure off this area a bit. The other side of me is fine. I've ridden over 700 miles now - you'd think my hiney would be toughened up by now

You could try some NuSkin or other skin products to help you get through the week. It burns like all heck and you'll curse your bike up & down while applying it, but once its dry it will stay there and let you ride. Most ultra cyclists swear by it

Man - I know how it hurts on other parts of me - I can only imagine putting new skin on these parts - yowza! At least I wouldn't have to stop training - I'm getting into my longer builds and really want to keep at it. Thanks - I wouldn't have thought of using it down there

Oh yeah, it WILL hurt. But nothing will get you back on your bike faster.

I'm a newbie, but in pretty much every sport I've ever played, when you have a piece of equipment causing an issue like that we taped over the skin to prevent it. Is it possible to take some athletic tape and wrap the thigh in that spot?

Ouch, the thought of taking the tape off in that area just made me cringe...

It's got to be better than a persistent bleeding sore. I'd much rather deal with the 10 second burn of white tape than have a nasty infection risk up there.

Make sure you take off your shorts asap when done get a good shower to clean up the area...

Switch cycling shorts

Boil Ease will help the sore as well

Those are general tips...

From your post I think your suggestion on adjusting the saddle would work best...1Hr ride should be fine...lubed up of course.

I am doing all you suggested - making sure I get out of my shorts right away, showering etc. I did seem to do better when I was using bag balm instead of this chamois cream but the washing machine doesn't seem to get all the bag balm out of my shorts and that was grossing me out. Maybe I should switch back. I will try the assois cream when it gets here.

I will be stalking the drug stores in search of Boil Ease.

I will use New Skin for tomorrow's ride - I am sure glad today is a running day

My roommate was headed to the drug store and asked if i needed anything... I said pick me up some Boil Ease.... she did and said you're on your own applying it.

If it helps, another thing we used to do powerlifting for skin tears is superglue. That wasn't meant to be longterm, of course, but if you're in a jam and need to fix it NOW in order to get back on the bike superglue is pretty good at fixing skin tears so you can keep going. Bass players use it on their fingertips, too, from what I'm told. Piece of skin rips off? Glue it back on!

you should probably spend a little less time in the saddle until it heals, then invoke some preventive measures.

1. switch shorts

2. wash those shorts frequently so bacteria cannot grow

3. don't leave those shorts on any longer than your ride

4. keep your junk clean, cool, and dry when not riding

5. properly lube w/ chammy butt'r (or something like it) before each ride.

that's all i have for ya.  it works for me!

I had a buddy with the similar issue. He is shaved, so he put a piece of athletic tape over the area on one of his rides to see if it is a rubbing issue, or a pinching issue. The tape will stop a rubbing issue, and if it is a pinching issue, that is prone to be a seat issue or adjustment issue.

Rubbing use chamios cream.

Pinching adjust seating position.

I think it is more of a pinching issue - at least it feels much more like pinching than rubbing. I will play with my saddle a bit and see if I can get the pinching to stop. It is worse when I ride on the road than on the trainer.

My guess would be the seat adjustment, but I don't have much experience with the problem. For what it's worth, I've never tried any kind of cream while riding. Could it be you're softening the skin too much? I don't have any bike shorts either, just a couple pair of tri shorts, and when it's cold I just wear underarmor underwear with cotton sweat pants. I haven't been going much over 3 hours yet this spring though.

Please, please, please not a different saddle - this is try number 5 and is by far the most comfortable (except for the saddle sores). I second the professional fit - the closest fitter is about 2.5 hours away - maybe I can get one for mother's day

I think the fit has a lot to do with it. I have had a similar issue- only on one side, pinching. My bike fit was adjusted because one leg was longer than the other and it's pretty much gone away.

So, bike fit X 10000

Great responses from everyone, however, need I remind everyone of the one true basic piece of advice. HTFU, don't let a little boo boo get in your way...Besides the Nuskin stuff will burn like a son of a gun. Good luck!

Do you have a race coming up soon? If not I would recommend letting it heal instead of taping/new skin/gluing it shut. IMO all you are going to do is prolong the problem. I've had to ride with saddle sores on cross state bike tours where we couldn't take time off. The only way to get rid of a saddle sore is to stay off the bike until it heals.

While you're healing adjust your saddle and fix your problem. You really don't want to have to go to a dr. to get it taken care of. Saddle sores can turn into nasty little problems that last for a really long time.

When it is healed (maybe your assos cream will be here by then) slowly increase your time on the saddle. If this is your 5th saddle then something might be wrong with your bike fit.

There is a good post under the archive section of "Ask the Doc" on the Texas Bicycle Racing Association forum web page. The 2 part post on saddle sore treatment can be found in a post made on June 15th by a dr/cyclist. Keep scrolling down until you find it.

Good luck with the saddle sore.
