Age Group Rank = 10/15
Pre-race routine:

Got up @ 5:15 - Ate a pb&j sandwich and drank a couple of cups of coffee - Headed over to the park from the hotel, got my chip and body-marking, then started pacing...
Event warmup:

Paced around nervous - Got in the water and swam around a little...
Swim
  • 16m 11s
  • 600 meters
  • 02m 42s / 100 meters
Comments:

My swim is definitely my weakest link - Need to be able to do it all in the front crawl instead of the side-stroke... This being my first experience, I took people's advice and started on he outside in the back -- I was amazed how many people were actually worse swimmers than me! Some of those guys actually looked like they were drowning - Flailing around, gasping, choking, spitting - I felt sorry for them - If I was passing them, they were sloooow... I passed about 25 people on the swim, and actually swam right up on top of one guy - Right up on his back - He turned his head and looked up at me and I could have kissed him! I thought that was kind of funny, but just slid right off and swam inside and around him as he treaded water wondering what in the world just happened:) I did the whole thing side-stroke, and will be hitting the pool hard the ext 6 weeks to insure a much better swim in the international distance at Richard B. Russell...
What would you do differently?:

Learn to swim better...
Transition 1
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Did pretty good - I was so relieved to finish the swim, I lost about 10 seconds doing my victory dance at water's edge :) - Then I walked up the little hill toward the transition - But the wetsuit came right off, helmet, sunglasses and shoes on quick, and got off fine on the bike...
What would you do differently?:

Run out of the water all the way to transition area - Will the next time, but just wnted to savor the moment coming out of the first swim...
Bike
  • 36m 37s
  • 11.2 miles
  • 18.35 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike was actually better than I expected - Since I was in the 5th wave starting the swim, I was behind most of the people when I started - The good thing about that is you pass way more people than pass you! I was passed by about 5 or 6 people, but probably passed 40 or so on the bike... But - I still need to work on HILLS big time...
What would you do differently?:

Be better prepared for hills...
Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Messed up by going to the wrong rack! I knew I was on the end, but ran to the wrong rack!! Probably lost 20 - 25 seconds running back and forth looking for my stuff before I got my head and realized what was happening...
What would you do differently?:

Just get more experience...
Run
  • 27m 4s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Really upset with the run - with no experience other than a couple of bricks, I wasn't sure after leaving t2 how had to go -- I finished the first mile @ 10 minutes and though, crap! I picked up the pace to about 8:30 for the last two miles and finished with gas in the tank ---
What would you do differently?:

Run much harder out of t2...
Post race
Warm down:

Kissed my wife, talked to a couple of friends, and drank a bottle of water

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperience...

Event comments:

Great first race experience - Looking forward to the next one already!

Great race, Pop. That's the great thing about being a weak swimmer, you pass tons of people on the bike. It sounds like you learned a lot from the race, especially the run, stuff that you can apply to your training and your upcoming oly. congratulations, triathlete!!

eta: Oh, and Pop, this post is my 4000th post.  You get the honor of being the recipient.

Awesome race, Pop!

And just to let you know - even with the victory dance and wetsuit removal, you still beat me in T1! : ) And on the bike too!

When you start swimming the crawl, you will be unstoppable.
