Pre-race routine:

Went for packet pick up Friday night. Race is set up with a small wave every 12 min with two swimmers per pool lane. Since i registered this week and the start times are by first registered first to go , i am just about last at 11:48. i just hope its not as windy as it usually gets here by midday .

With folks starting as early as 8 am its unlikely I will see many competitors other the ones in my heat .

Should be fun anyway and a race effort workout.
Event warmup:

Well i decided to go earlier than my start time , and after parking went to the pool to see how things were going . There was a very short line so I was told to line up and i could go when i wanted. I was happy to be able to start earlier than planned , so i set up in the transition , visited the loo and headed to the pool .

Its a 25 yards i think because we had to do 9 laps , i kept my flip flops at the end so it was very confortable to run to T1 Transition in the parking lot . Water temp was nice but water was pretty cloudy and tasted hard . I could not see the end of the pool underwater.
Did breastroke and confortably went through the set. Ran over to the bike .

Transition 1
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

Ran in my flip flops from the pool to the transition so i was able to pass a few folks that were barefoot.
I spent a little extra time to put on my new HR monitor and load up with an extra
tube and co2 .

Good transition and onto the bike quickly
decided to ease in the hammmer until after the bike path part .
Mile 2 or so . Latched on to a stroong rider in front of me and tried to keep up.
Eventually passed him at mile 12 when he seem to run out of gas .
He eventually passed me again on the run but i was maxxed out so it could not go any faster.
What would you do differently?:

Rode the course twice with helped immensely in knowing what to expect in term of gears hills , turns , etc and winds.
Transition 2
  • 00m 36s
Comments:

Dismount line and ran over to my rack which was pretty close , Switched shoes and grabed number belt and water

First brrrick of the season and it really sucked to do in the heat at midday , just kept pouring the water bottles over my head and on my arms , 1 per mile . Did not drink much at all. Pace for mile one was 8:52 and slowed after that mainly due to from heat .
What would you do differently?:

Run much earlier , was the toughest challenge to complete
Post race
Warm down:

Found some shade and drank water to cool down

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It was getting hot . I dont do well when running in the heat.

Event comments:

Nice race well organized , I am glad i signed up. Its a great way to start the season.
I miss the Strawberry Fields Triathlon , which has unfortunately moved from march to middle of summer. Ironically its No longer in the Oxnard Starwberry season.
