Subject: Garmin 305 vs new 405 for newbie

I'm a tri newbie that just today started training for my first Tri in September.

I've used the Nike + system for numerous months now and i'm fed up with it's inconsistency.  I'm continually having to recalibrate it and i'm sick of it.  Just this morning it was nearly 1/2 mile off.

Anyhow, i'm about convinced that i want a Garmin to replace the Nike +.   I've read here (and everywhere else on the web) that the Garmin 305 is an excellent piece of equipment to train with.   However, i also have read about the new Garmin 405 that is due out next month.

So i'm wondering what the minds here would suggest for me.   I really really like the looks of the new 405 compared to the 305 (although i've never seen the 305 in person).   However, it does cost a bit more.

Would i be more than happy with the 305 or should i hold out and spend the extra for the 405?

I have been using the 305 for about a year now and love it. It goes on my road and mtn. bike for every ride. The amount of fields you can display and track are great. I change what and how much is displayed depending on the ride and circumstances.

Taking it on a run is not so easy though. It fits in my pocket, but I tend to constantly check to make sure I didn't drop it and seeing heart rate and pace is tough when it is the pocket.

I just started looking at the 405 this week and like that it will do most of what the 305 will do, just display less at a time. It would be by far better for running though. Garmin states tht it is not intended for swimming, so this is what is keeping me from taking a more serious look.

For the money right now I would rather carry my 305 and the new 705. I really wish they would pull their heads out and make a 405 type device that is true made for swimming on top of what it does. Perhaps there is an alternative, but I have not done that much looking.

out of curiosity, why don't you wear it for running?  why do you keep it in your pocket?

Forerunner 405 does not log multi-sport workouts (305 does) and has a shorter battery life than the 305.

Also curious why you run with the 305 in your pocket. Is it the Forerunner 305, or the Edge?

Agree that a 305 that you could swim with would be the ultimate.

I have used the 305 for years on rides and run and the satellite tracking is MUCH better than the 201 I previous used. The multi-sport that Bear mentions is a big plus. My concern with the 405 IS the said mentioned satellite tracking. With the small dial, how well can it lock and track the satellites?

Sorry, I have the Edge. Gotta remember to be clearer in the future.

I don't think I could ever get a Forerunner though, too big looking. I see them as the cell phone of the 80s compared to current ones. You would think they would be able to pack the features and technology into a nice little package. Maybe someday.

Odd that someone who runs with an Edge in his pocket thinks the Forerunner comes in an inconvenient package...

Cool

I also forgot to mention that I only did that once or twice.

Perhaps I need to try to keep my foot on the ground instead of in my mouth...

Friday I bought a 405 and I am learning how it works. So far I am frustrated  that during a workout it will go into sleep mode and I am not able to get back to where I was. To get it out of sleep mode takes some fiddling that is not so easy while running. Also logging the workout is out as I've lost my place. So far it seems pretty complicating.  I would be happy to just to see it stay on the screen I set it in at the start.

I just did the same thing, but REI is right around the corner, so I'm staring at the box. I can't wait to get home and start playing with it!

I picked up a 305 at a local REI today as well since they seem to be on backorder on the website now. I just resist playing with it, so I went out for a 1.5 mile walk just to play with it and test the features. I couldn't seem to get it to detect my HR. Since I'm posting, I'm pretty sure I'm not dead. Any ideas?

  • Moisten the chest strap before putting it on
  • Check the chest strap battery.
  • See a physician to verify that whole "not dead" assumption.

Also, read the Garmin FAQ.

I highly recommend you take a look at SportTracks software as well as the FTPplugin module for it.

Here are the links for both of those:

SportTracks: http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/
FtpPlugin: http://www.heldwhat.com/running/index.htm

You can see an example of the output from the ftpplugin on my webpage here: http://www.blava.org/running

Thanks for the suggestions and link, Bear. I did moisten the strap before putting it on. I saw mention on the MB forum that some people who experienced this same issue had better luck using some electrode gel instead of just water, so I might give that a try. Another suggestion I saw was to put on the chest strap ~10 mins before starting the workout. I'll give those a try and then go the route of checking the battery if I'm still not having any joy. I suppose a visit to the physician wouldn't hurt either.

FM - I installed the GTC software on my laptop running Vista SP1 and had no problems. I have it configured so that whenever I connect my 305 to the USB port, the GTC software automatically launches.

blech on the Garmin software.

I use motionbased.com.  And you don't have to buy a membership to see more than 20 (or whatever it is) workouts.  Just search your user name and they will all come up.

just upgraded from the 301 to the 305. It's awesome! No problems... and very comfortable on the wrist. The multisport function works great and the auto-pause feature is nice too. Highly recommend.

Picked up the 305 last night and a quick change wrist/bike kit from REI. They were out of the cadence/speed kits. Will order it online in a few minutes.

One thing....this unit it really big! And this is coming from somebody that wears a Sunnto Vector wrist watch ever day (a very big watch).

Will let yall know how I like it. Gonna do a 5K run tonight (if I get the battery charged in time.....and figure out how to use it).

Make sure you install it as an administrator, probably need to run it as an administrator also. That is a big problem with Vista.

If you don't know how to do that, right click on the icon and you will see the option there.

After using the 305 for 6 months decided to switch to the 405 mainly because of the styling. Was very frustrated and disappointed with the 405. In fact, I'm going to return the 405. You pretty much just turned the 305 on and the functions were easy to activate. Its use is very straightforward. After monkeying around with the 405's bezel ring and menu's that I could not get out of decided I didn't need this type of frustration. I think Garmin got a little too cute with this and has missed the mark. I'm sure that those who invest the time and are better at figuring these types of things out may disagree but the learning curve is definitely greater.
