Swim
Comments: I didn't like the swim set-up at all. I don't know that I will ever do a pool swim again. I swam a little slower than I predicted, but that was probably because I had to slow down in almost every lap to get around someone. Swimming is all about momentum for me and it was impossible to get any when you have to pass people all of the time. There were 30 second breaks in the starts, so there was no reason for that much traffic if people had been honest about their swimming ability. What would you do differently?: I guess I should state that I swim faster than i do, so I will actually be placed with people of my level, but I don't feel right about doing that. Kind of how I was 6'4" when I was a senior in basketball in the program (I'm 6'2"). Transition 1
Comments: The transition was weird. You got out of the pool and ran out of the building to the other side of the buildinh (it was cold) then back in and through the doors (which signalled the end of your swim according to timing) then into the bike area. It took me longer than it should have because I put on tights and a second jersey due to the low temperature and wind. I also put on gloves. It was hard to run in the transition area (cement floor where a hockey rink normally is), so I took it easy on the running. What would you do differently?: I would have HTFU and not worn the tights. Bike
Comments: I had a great bike given the conditions. The wind was horrid, even making folks stand up to get up hills. I passed several people that had to walk up the bigger hills. There were times when it was all I could do to go 7 MPH up a hill and 11 mph on flats. It was brutal. After the turnaround, I was flying. With the wind at my back, I was cruising 24 mph with no problem and got up to 28 or so a couple of times. My time would have been better had I not gotten a flat at around mile 4. I changed it pretty fast (just over 5 minutes) and went right back at it. I was glad that it was at the top of a hill so I could start out with some momentum against the wind. What would you do differently?: Not get a flat? I rode it pretty well given the conditions. Transition 2
Comments: Yeah - has some issues. right foot out of shoe easy enough, left foot I couldn't m anage to get on top of shoe - almost crashed. Stood up on pedal and swung my right leg over, and my tight got caught on the saddle front. Almost crashed again. Finally got off. Everything else went fine. What would you do differently?: I guess I should practice getting off of the bike with tights on? Since they are not a tight as the tri shorts, they hang down a touch, which is what got caught. Run
Comments: Flat, nice run. I improved more than 2 minutes per mile over my last race. I was pretty happy with that. What would you do differently?: Run faster? I just have to keep running and get better. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and had some water/gatorade. What limited your ability to perform faster: Overall fitness. I have to get a swim coach and keep improving on the run. Event comments: This is a small race in it's second year, but they do a fantastic job. The volunteers were awesom!!! There were to ladies standing around mile 7 controlling traffic. It was windy and fairly cold. When I went by on the way out they were cheering everyone on and when I came back they were still yelling. If I could have found them at the end, I would have bought them a beer. Last updated: 2008-01-19 12:00 AM

I didn't really know how to handle the nutrition issue as it turned out I wouldn't start until 11:30. I ate a toasted bagel w/ PB and a banana in the morning, loaded the car and headed over to the start area. Took some time to set up the transition and then went over to meet Theresa (ctnord), then I talked to some Des Moines friends of mine. Talked to a guy that forgot his water bottles, so I loaned him a couple, and helped a mother/daughter team set up their transition, as it was their first time.
The start was very strecthed out, so I watched some frinds do their swim and transition, then I went into the warm-up area and did some warm-up laps.
